2. You need another category.
Out in the woods more than fifty miles from the nearest store and gas station.

12. Sounds like Montana
Had a friend that lived 43 miles up a dirt road from Broadus. That's an existance that is fast disapearing in America.

24. Montana, North Idaho and Eastern Washington.
Places are so remote there that they have an excellent Medivac helicopter system to get people that need emergency care and hospitalization to the few cities in the area like Spokane and Missoula. In eastern Washington, close to the Canadian border, I had to have the local ambulance service (volunteer fire department loggers) come for my husband who had a stroke.

I did not know how I would get him to Spokane in time. But they packed him onto a helicopter and had him in the ER in no time. The medics on the helicopter were able to bring his blood pressure down on the trip which was in the stratosphere. He would have died otherwise if I had tried to drive him to Spokane.

9. Downtown Portland, Oregon - a city of the future....
with excellent transit that is being ramped up all the time. Also they are investing in alternative energy in the downtown core. 20 years from now, Portland will be well-positioned for the change in lifestyle that will surely come with the combination of peak oil and water shortages that will make places like Las Vegas and Phoenix (particularly their suburbs) nearly uninhabitable.

23. It would really help to quantify "Big City".....
Considering there are less than a dozen "Big Cities" (by my standards) in the US.... what are we talking about here ?

I live in a suburb about 10 mi from large metropolis of about 750k people... is this a "big city" ? Not by my standards.

I'm in the "city limits" (just barely) and the county we live in has about 1.5M people....

Not sure this helps what you are trying to discover... but these are the facts considering I could not accurately answer your poll.

That being said... I am about 200mi from either Houston or Dallas and about 1500 mi from New York... all I consider a "big cities". :)

25. About 15 minutes to the nearest town. 45 minutes to Portland, OR.
About 3 acres of forest and meadow. A long way from L.A., which we moved from in '81. Just the thought of living in a city again, gives me the willies.

27. I live in a municipality of under 10,000
All municipalities within 20 miles of it are also under 10,000. It is big enough to feel like civilization to me though.
