Chad Castagana under house arrest until trial
A Woodland Hills man who allegedly sent threatening letters containing white powder to Jon Stewart, David Letterman and House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, among others, was ordered Thursday released on $350,000 bond, but will have to remain under house arrest while he awaits trial.

Chad Conrad Castagana was ordered not to mail anything while on bond, and will have to wear an electronic monitoring device, Assistant U.S. Attorney Donald Gaffney said.

Castagana was arrested Saturday, after FBI agents who had him under surveillance saw him deposit several envelopes in a mailbox near his house.

He faces up to 15 years in federal prison if convicted of charges he gave false information and mailed threats.

12. He'd probably have to get his computer back, first.
I'm interested in the fact that he has a court-appointed attorney. Now, why would he need an attorney? Aren't all lawyers dirt, according to freeps? He should've said no to an attorney and stood on principle.

 A freep and principle!

Funny how it's never their lawyer who's evil, only the other guy's. :eyes:

10. so who put up the money for no-job Chad's bond?
did mom have to put up the house for security? I'm sure all of this has really improved her health. And notice how that the poor little terrorist is now suffering from "depression."

"The letters were sent after Castagana's mother had a heart attack and had to temporarily move out of the home she shares with her son, who suffers from depression, Blanco said."

15. Money for bail, yet no money for a lawyer. His is court-appointed.
Taxpayers are providing an attorney for a freeper.

18. well, I guess technically Chad the Free Republic Terrorist has no income, since he is not employed
I guess that's why?

But still, you would think he would want to stand on his FReeker principles, and reject that kind of commie pinko big government assistance, huh?

19. Are any freeps employed? Doubt it! But where did he get the bail money?
Edited on Thu Nov-16-06 09:17 PM by txindy
And why isn't that going towards his attorney's fees? Even if he only put down 10% for bail, that's $35,000. So why wasn't that put towards hiring an attorney? Why can he get out of jail for at least $35,000, yet get a free attorney? Because, as you said quite eloquently, he didn't "reject that kind of commie pinko big government assistance." He's a bigot, a terrorist, AND a hypocrite. Ol' Chad's hit the trifecta.

I don't think her income/assets are considered when it comes to hiring a public defender for her unemployed Free Republic-posting loser son?

11. What kind of a Judge would allow such BS bail hearing?
<snip>

"....Castagana's public defender, Alicia Blanco, argued that the alleged acts were unusual for her client....and that "The letters were sent after Castagana's mother had a heart attack and had to temporarily move out of the home she shares with her son, who suffers from depression, Blanco said."

"According to an affidavit supporting the charges, Castagana told an FBI agent that he had sent about 17 letters containing a mixture of household items, such as baking soda, laundry detergent and Ajax cleanser."

...episode against his lawyers advice, probably under another name and defending his actions while posing as another person. He'll be at home with his PC right there in his parent's basement with him....the temptation will be too great for this blowhard.

Watch for newbies on FR and other right-wing sites posting in Chad's defense. LOL

17. More letters arriving still
Since Castagana's arrest, additional letters he allegedly sent Nov. 8 have begun arriving at their destinations, including a second letter to Pelosi and a letter to Sen. Dianne Feinstein, D-Calif., Gaffney said in court Thursday.

Can any of the fake white powder recipients and their highly trained lawyers bring some sort of suit against lil Chad? I realize he has no assets and no prospects for future assets, but just for the sake of fucking with him.

Maybe get an intern in the legal department to do the legwork. If nothing else, responding to the suit would cut into lil Chad's freeperville activities.

33. Why is he out of jail at all? He terrorized people. Does he have friends
in high places?

Makes me wonder who he got his marching orders from. I would have thought he'd be jailed while awaiting trial.
Maybe someone higher up sprung him. Maybe he didn't just come up with this idea out of his own little pea brain.
