"Up the Media!"
I think it's time to focus our attention on our greatest nemesis. The Corporate Media. While they stand in place and spin against us at the behest of their corporate masters, the average American citizen remains mostly ignorant of what's going on.

http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_mesg&forum=364&topic_id=2735619&mesg_id=2735619

I'd like to take the idea Nance Greggs posted there and run with it. I propose that we make one day in January, maybe the 15th, and officially make it "Up the Media" day. We get together and send mass mailings to every media outlet we can think of--newspapers, the television networks, foreign newspapers, our incoming members of Congress, you name it. Make it a massive campaign, dedicated to bombarding the media with direct evidence that we, the citizens of the United States, are fully aware of what's been going on and that we've had enough.

Let's get together and make January 15th "Up the Media Day."

How's that sound?

2. Love the idea
I'm convinced they're already scared stiff about the rise of the internet. Now it's time to twist the knife a little.

4. Well, that's the dumbest idea I ever heard of!
(ha, ha)

I think this could have some impact. It's true, the MSM is aware they are losing audience share to that nasty, tube-infested internetz. Why not shake 'em up a little?

Lots of us still tune into the tube for entertainment -- but NEVER for the news coverage, which oscillates between being totally biased and completely non-existent.

News outlets could get nervous by being bombarded with our dissatisfaction - and corporate sponsors, who pay through the nose for advertising time on news shows, could get REALLY jumpy!

A few hundred emails from disgruntled viewers get ignored -- but a few hundred thousand emails, all sent on the same day, WILL get noticed.

Who's in?

5. What is really needed
is to convince big-monied liberal funders that they need to invest in media infrastructure exactly as the right has done with great success.

An organized action like that being discussed here should really be aimed at wealthy liberals and their organizations so that they understand that the media is the real key to political power. Then they can start investing in ownership of news outlets etc.

I've been through about 12 books on the media and have written a long article about this, but it's always evolving, and I never seem to be able to "finish it." It's actually the main reason I even joined Democratic underground in the first place. I guess I need to do a final edit and put it out there.

But if we don't get an effective media in place, both to better inform the public, and to counter right-wing propaganda, I think we can kiss our republic goodbye long-term. It's already hanging by a thread.

6. Yes, you need to finish it...
Believe me, I know what it's like to want to edit something to a fault, to want to give it that last little bit that makes it perfect. But it doesn't work that way. If you do it too long, you get addicted to the process and it becomes nearly impossible to finish.

Take it from me. I've been there.

7. Well, let me know what date is settled on, and I'll do what I can.....
I'm tired of them telling me what I should think instead of providing some facts and letting me make my own determination.

8. I'm aiming for the 15th...
Since I'm working on coordinating this with Nance, I'm sure she will be posting something in her journal about it over the next couple of days as well.

13. My suggestion: change the date.
It conflicts with MLK's birthday and many students won't be on campus. My vote is to get students involved.

14. The date isn't set.
We figured we'd get us past the holidays and see what works the best. I just threw the fifteenth out there because it's the middle of the month.

Let me mention that to Nance and see what we can do with it.
