Bush: "IT'S AMAZING THAT I AM HERE IN VIETNAM!"
I'll say. Better late than never.

Then he lectures us all about the lessons of the Vietnam War, being such an expert.

HANOI, Vietnam - President Bush said Friday the United States' unsuccessful war in Vietnam three decades ago offered lessons for the American-led struggle in Iraq. "We'll succeed unless we quit," Bush said shortly after arriving in this one-time war capital...

"We tend to want there to be instant success in the world, and the task in Iraq is going to take awhile," the president said. He called the Iraq war a "great struggle" and said, "It's just going to take a long period of time for the ideology that is hopeful — and that is an ideology of freedom — to overcome an ideology of hate."

In the years since the 1975 fall of the Washington-backed regime in Saigon, the United States and Vietnam have reconciled their war differences. Bush said he found it hopeful that countries can "move beyond past differences for the common good."

As his motorcade moved through Hanoi, Bush passed Truc Bach lake, where then-Lt. Cmdr. John McCain, now a Republican senator from Arizona, was captured after parachuting from his damaged warplane. McCain spent more than five years as a prisoner during the Vietnam War, which claimed the lives of more than 58,000 Americans.

The collision of past and present seemed to affect Bush.

"Laura and I were talking about how amazing it is that we're here in Vietnam," the president said.

Edited on Sat Nov-18-06 08:49 AM by exlrrp
I can just see Georgie there trying to be a leader ( or anything else) WhaT exactly could he have done when he was disqualified from doing ANYTHING in the military (see discharge below: Qualifications: NONE) (their capitals, not mine)
With him there we would only have lost quicker (which aint a bad idea now I stop to think of it)
People may accuse me of showing this discharge before--its so reprehensible I just love showing it. No medals, no qualifications at all, a clear statement he didn't finish his commitment and he didn't even show up to sign it. Any other veteran here not show up to sign his discharge? That was the one day in the service they couldn't have kept me away from with napalm and White Phosphorous.
This discharge plainly shows in simple English the scam that is Bush's "military service" and the crooked way he got out of it. Bush's superiors kept him listed and paid as a pilot for 14 months after he had lost ALL his qualifications. As the discharge plainly shows, Bush, when discharged, was not quaified to lead a KP detail!!
How did YOU like having paid a pilot for 47 days of pilots work, spread out over 14 months, after he had been suspended from flying and lost ALL his qualifications?
See the huge anomaly there? Listed as a pilot with NO qualifications? Bush was kept listed and--paid--as a pilot for 14 months after he had been suspended from flying, his ONLY job. And this discharge proves it.(there's alot of other things that prove it also)
America, youve been defrauded!

(edited for spelling)

17. So he goes to Vietnam to say 'success' would have been the US staying there
until they had 'won'. Wow, another great step forward for American diplomacy - "nice place you got here. Would have been a whole lot nicer if we'd stayed here long enough to kill more of you folks".

He's not a lame duck, he's a loose cannon. He's got nothing to lose, and his minders seem to have given up trying to restrain him. Can't his mouth be taped up or something?

Takes a trip to Vietnam surrounded by a brazillion security people umpteen years after the war is over. What was The First Warrior doing during the war? Holding down bar stools, completely protected by his father`s last name and connections. He should have a little chat with my vet friend who was a "tunnel rat" during the war. Unlike Junior, that friend had neither a rescuing father nor a white collar.

39. Is it just me, or is this gibberish on a sort of tape loop?
"We tend to want there to be instant success in the world, and the task in Iraq is going to take awhile," the president said. He called the Iraq war a "great struggle" and said, "It's just going to take a long period of time for the ideology that is hopeful — and that is an ideology of freedom — to overcome an ideology of hate."

This is nonsense.

45. I turned on the news this morning...
NBC Today Show, and they got to the story of Bush in Vietnam. One of the first lines out of the reporters mouth was "President Bush has never been to Vietnam before this trip." Then there was a noticeable pause before the rest of the report. I thought that subtle line was great, PREGNANT with meaning!

What were his handlers thinking when they were planning this trip?

The little shitass, who did everything in his power to avoid going to Vietnam, shows up three decades later at US taxpayer expense to pontificate that "We'll succeed unless we quit" - in Iraq - his personal war of choice in which close to 3000 US soldiers and hundreds of thousands of Iraqis have died for nothing. Try spewing your shit on the streets of Baghdad, asshole. The locals will give you some of that "great struggle" - in spades.

60. Let me get this straight
I'm AWOL in 1965, after thirty days I'm a deserter, no one can testify that they have known me during my service nor my whereabouts, and yet in the year 2000 the courts appoint me as the President of the United States without question or investigation. I invent a war based on lies killing hundreds of thousands Iraq's and close to three thousands of our American troops not to mention the thousands wounded, confess that Iraq has nothing to do with 9/11, make jokes of WMD's as our troops are being killed by an enemy we can't define while spouting "STAY THE COURSE AND UNTIL THE JOB IS DONE" which no one understands what he means, and through all of this some BUTTHEADS here at DU would say "Don't Impeach",while this coward visits Vietnam and have the gall to make a comparison to his war.

61. It's the standard wingnut line on Vietnam: Walter Cronkite lost the war
because he failed to report that parts of Saigon weren't actually burning during the Tet Offensive. We didn't lose, the media talked the American people into quitting. What's deeply offensive about that message--especially to the people of Vietnam, I would think--is that the US killed between three and five MILLION people in S.E. Asia during the fifteen years of the war. Again, the number is 3 to 5 MILLION--roughly fifteen percent of the total population of Vietnam. Imagine if the Soviets invaded the U.S., killed an equivalent number (45 million men, women and children), were driven out, and then the Soviet premier returned thirty years later expressing regret for not having killed MORE PEOPLE. Jesus Christ on a fucking soda cracker.

there's a lot of true hardness in those facts, and to think Shrubya and Pickles went over there and most likely (as in 100%)didn't even think about all the people we killed back when they were party hopping, makes me question the competence of anyone who defends Bush as being a good leader; actually I think they're dangerous.

I'd prefer to leave Jesus Christ out of this, especially when discussing Shrub... thank you in advance.

I believe that it will take mubh more than twenty years to
repair the damage of George II. Remember Bill Clinton was only
able to repair part of the damage caused by Reagan and George
I. If you add the damage from those administrations to the
damage caused by this one then 50-100 years is more like it.

It wasn't easy getting home from the O Club all the time with a .03 BAC. It took great skill to avoid getting many more DUI's. Bush always had to plan a route to avoid detection. AFAIK, he only got busted drunk driving once, so he must be some kind of genius.

"we quit"? Obviously, the nation itself is a SUCCESS. There are no Vietnamese "terrorists" agitating against the U.S.

So how does he perceive the U.S. as NOT having "succeeded" because "we quit", if VietNam is peaceful today, enough for him to visit?

He could mean only one thing, assuming he is lucid: The U.S. FAILED because WE---i.e., Halliburton, Bechtel, etc.---do not totally OWN VietNam.

But who is getting more out of this deal?

The US

Vietnam

Or what we think is the US but may ultimately be Vietnam?

I don't mind globalization and free trade, but when it comes to US jobs, we have to maintain our economy and people too.
