Michigan Store Boycotted for Gay Support
By Bryan Ochalla

A few statistics pulled from the Human Rights Campaign’s Corporate Equality Index is all the evidence usually needed to prove being gay-friendly in 2006 is good for business.
That is, unless your business is in Mason, Michigan.

Teri Yale, owner of Davey’s Basement (www.daveysbasement.com ), an alternative record shop located in downtown Mason, found that out the hard way after supporting the local high school’s gay-straight alliance.

After agreeing to sponsor a float the group entered into Mason High School’s homecoming parade in late September, Yale and her year-old business were hit with labels, accusations, police visits—and, of course, a boycott.

1. I am going to buy somthing from them online!
Well, their website is down right now. Their server is overloaded. Once it is up and running, I will check out their site. If I am able to buy stuff online, then I will. Man, I really despise the right wing.

8. Not so long as religions exist to stir up trouble.

Not so long as religions exist to stir up trouble.

And even then, when the last religion is gone,
inDUHviduals will still re-invent ignorant
prejudices.

3. There's a cool record store in my home town?! Cool!!!
Of course, I am in no way suprised that she's going through this. This does mean, however, that I might have to make a trip home and check out her store.

Ahh, Mason. County seat controlled by the old families and big churches. Interesting place. I feel bad for the current Student Senate president (my old job)--s/he was ultimately in charge of the parade and Homecoming festivities and is probably getting all kinds of flack, too. Stay strong!

I'm so checking out her shop. Not everyone in Mason is a moron. I'm telling my mom, too--the former high school art teacher. She still stays in touch with people. I'm sure there's more to the story that's going around the local gossip chain.

They're right downtown across from the courthouse. I'm going to make a trip as soon as I'm better.

ETA: Their hours are 11-7 EST, just in case anyone wanted to know. :)

7. Nah, Mason would just do a gossip chain smear campaign.
They're very good at it. They did it to my mom, the high school art teacher, more than once. I was almost impeached when I was Student Senate president my senior year because the popular kids didn't like something about that fall's homecoming. It's an odd town.

According to the article, they were also accused of worshipping Satan. Now, that sounds like the town I grew up in. :eyes: I well remember the Satan-worshippers using the fairgrounds for their animal sacrifices story from when I was in high school.

Seriously, though, not everyone in Mason is like that. I know the art gallery owners had to leave after not getting enough business, but there are a lot of good people there who are probably trying to fight this.

9. I'll order something online when their server is back up
It's a bit too far to drive.

That's so sad :( I hope things work out for them.
