Regan Turns on O.J. Simpson (she "set up" OJ to confess on behalf of battered women)
Nov. 16, 2006 — Publishing maverick Judith Regan issued a statement Thursday night, calling her most-famous author a "killer" and acknowledging that she set up O.J. Simpson in a bid to get a confession out of him on behalf of battered women everywhere — herself among them.

Regan, Harper Collins' enfant terrible, is being widely vilified for publishing what is being touted as a "fictional" confession to the real murders of Nicole Brown Simpson and her friend, Ronald Goldman.

The fictional confession is given in Simpson's forthcoming new book, "If I Did It."

Regan now says that she was physically abused by her husband and other men. She says the interview she did with Simpson was an attempt at personal justice and "closure" in her own life.

In the 2,210-word statement, Regan says that Brown Simpson and Goldman "were in my heart" during the interview.

1. She can make all the excuses in the world.
For me, she would have to state that all proceeds of any revenues realized as a result of this special were to be donated to a battered woman's shelter or something like that.

She arranged it through a third party who will get the money.

3. Is she telling us that Republican "hero" Bernard Kerik is also a
mistress beater? Wouldn't surprise me in the least.

So, she set O.J. up. Well honey, you can set ME up anytime you want if you cut ME a check for $3.5M.

Who's zoomin who here?

6. Takes one to know one.
Welcome to DU.

(Your comment is pretty insensitive, you might want to brush up on the psychological and sociological context in which women "invite" this abuse. You might want to start with the concept that men who abuse women do not wear an identifying lapel pin or register on MySpace under the "Like to beat up women" screen name.)

10. Spend some time in a battered women's shelter
you'll find out it is a very common pattern - even among extremely intelligent women. Many were battered as children, or watched their fathers batter their mother, and have been told repeatedly, from infancy, that women deserve to be beaten by the men who "love" them - and men who are inclined to batter have a pretty good ability to select women who will tolerate that treatment, often acquiring that ability from watching their fathers batter their mothers.

and abusive relationships of all kind. I'm not commenting on Regan and the Simpson book, but calling any battered woman a "moron" is mind boggling...

27. No woman chooses a man, thinking, "He'll beat me, so I'll date him."
Violence is surprisingly common in relationships, and it's nearly impossible to know if someone will be violent when you first meet them and start a relationship. It's only once you're in that relationship that you find out.

Before you go blaming the victims, you should really think hard about what you're saying, think about it from their perspectives, and know what you're talking about.

34. Battered women's syndrome--worth looking up
That might explain the "moronish" behavior of some women who get involved in abusive relationships again and again. It's common to repeat patterns like this; they get learned in the brain and it is hard to unlearn them.

I don't know whether I buy the publisher's story in the OP--there's too much else going on in the OJ situation.

42. Intelligence has nothing to do with abuse in relationships.
Many times, abusive men will prey on women and usually they prey on women who have been abused before. These women are not morons. They are victims of barbaric predators.

28. I'm not sure now though
If she did it with the intention of getting him to confess there could be closure for them. Closure for us all. Having the truth be out once and for all is a small victory. I for one would welcome the end of debate over his guilt. He'll be even more of a pariah if that's possible. I can't imagine positive repercussions for him from this. He'll have the momentary pleasure from the attention but after that nothing.

but that picture has some horrible lighting that is causing some less than flattering shadows on her face.

I think if you saw her on the street she would be quite attractive. And even if she isn't, who cares. That has very little to do with this book deal.

I don't think she was expecting such a tsunami of moral outrage, so she "outed" herself with this story of working for "a higher good".

14. 3.5 million deposited to Simpson's Isle of Man account - secret offshore drop, but no "payment"
Glad to see that she says she "paid" Simpson nothing.

Good luck to the Goldmans on seeing a dime of that money.

When Simpson dropped the first $6 million in the bank, the executives of Sun Life of Canada - which owns the bank and its "private banking with no disclosure" system - were in shock. They even let the info out to the media.

And not a dime of the money is reachable by the Goldman's.

Maybe Tony Blair might make it one of his last acts to remove secret offshore account banking from areas under the control of Brittan, less than 75 miles from London.

25. Perhaps the best one
is "American Tragedy: the Uncensored Story of the Simpson Defense" by Lawrence Schiller and James Willwerth (Random House; 1996). It's a fairly lengthy book, at 685 pages, but it is actually an easy read, and goes by almost too quickly. The LA Times called it the best book on the case.

Also of great interest would be Vince Bugliosi's "Outrage: The Five Reasons Why OJ Simpson got Away with Murder" (Island; 1996). Get the newer edition, with "updated with new information" listed on the cover. It's 513 pages, and is fascinating reading. If he had prosecuted the case, OJ would be in prison today.

Several of the people involved in the case wrote interesting books. Though as a rule I prefer to read what defense attorneys say, in this case it is different. Marcia Clark's "Without a Doubt" (Penguin; 1997) is interesting reading. The '98 "updated" version is 489 pages, most of it focused on the case.

Christopher Darden's "In Contempt" (ReganBooks;1996)is worth reading. Like Clark, he expresses a lot of frustration for losing the case.

And, speaking of frustration, Mark Fuhrman wrote a curious book, "Murder in Brentwood" (Zebra; 1997). It was part of the process of rehabilitating his image, that has resulted in his being a guest on a number of talk shows in recent years.

The first book tells what happened; the second confirms it, and tells why the case was lost; the last three confirm the human weaknesses that allowed a sociopathic, cold-blooded murderer to walk.

36. The Bugliosi book is fantastic...I can't imagine any clear-thinking
person still believing the guy was not guilty of this crime after reading that book. For those that want to dismiss Bugliosi as some kind of right-wing nut, he also wrote a terrific book eviscerating the Supreme Court for handing over the Presidency to * in 2000 like it was some kind of record Powerball prize...

is neither right-wing, nor a nut.

"The Betrayal of America: How the Supreme Court Undermined the Constitution and Chose Our President" (Thunder's Mouth Press/Nation Books; 2001) remains the best book on the 2000 election. It includes wonderful forewords by Molly Ivins and Gerry Spence.

43. human weaknesses?
Are they fairly universal? Do these "human weaknesses" often result in innocent verdicts for a guilty person? How often does that happen in comparison the how many times the innocent are found guilty? And how do we know for sure when a guilty person was acquitted?

This sounds like a prosecution meme to keep jurors from voting their conscience and it could be largely responsible for aiding and abetting the "only prosecutors for judges" movement.

Seriously, it sounds like a "Universalize The Rare And Make It The Common" meme, because, you know, it is better to convict an innocent person than to let one guilty person get away, so don't let your human weakness get in the way of a good guilty verdict.
