It appears to be a hobby (or vocation) for some because they seem to have nothing else to do. They can be highly entertaining, if only in a horribly tragic, but absolutely gut-busting hilarious, sort of way.

Every few weeks you will see a post just like your's that claims to witness "a rise in troll behavior". That is most likely because they slipped up and become too obvious or have started threads to merely amuse themselves. But they are always here because of their twisted obsession with liberals.
