Sorry, I do not like PayPal. Long story.

no reason to let the paypal keep you from supporting DU.

And am I wrong, or aren't at least one of the online options non-paypal?

And what is that extra $1.00 for? Does PayPal get $1.00 for every donation?

77. I have no bills.....
Yeah, I do. Pay most with electronic debit. Really write some 10 checks a year.

I donated and then had it reversed because of PayPal. If you have ever had a problem with PayPal you will understand my position.

I will find a way to donate, and have donated in the past, but it won't be through PayPal.

And one more time: Does PayPal get that extra $1.00 charge for us donating?

As to questions--

from the top of the donation page

We recently upgraded our payment processing system so donations are handled securely by PayPal. You do not need a PayPal account in order to donate to Democratic Underground. If you have any questions about donating, please send an email to skinner@democraticunderground.com.

2. To those who lurk, please donate!
Remember some people donate annually so they would not be represented in the number every quarter. I do agree that 800 even 1000 is small in proportion to the total users! Even $1 x 98,000 would begin to add up.

4. There have been 98,000 registrations, not 98,000 registered users
Big difference. That 98,000 includes everyone who ever registered for an account here, even if they've never posted, or even re-loaded the page since then. It also includes people who've been tombstoned or just left. There is nowhere close to 98,000 people posting. But your point is well taken! Stars, everybody should have stars!

6. That would be an interesting stat to know
how many unique posters in the last X days (7 or 30).

Don't know if they can track it, but how many unique views (whether they read one thread or a hundred) would be fun to know as well.

28. Someone claims to have written a tracking script.
Can't tell you who...evil, bad people.

;)

It was created by disgruntled ex-posters on another site, which proudly boasts 205 as "most people ever online at one time" (just upped from 167, thanks to election night). They have about 33 regular posters, and usually their stats show more guest lurkers than members. The guy claims that his script has found about 5,000 regular posters here (give or take a troll or two). But he doesn't open it up for anyone, he just says "I ran my script and found..." They just take his word for it.

The funny part, though, is the way their 33 members BWHAHAHA themselves into a tizzy over DU claiming 98,000 "registrations," at high-five themselves that there are really "ONLY" five thousand people posting here.

Again, though...who really knows?

42. Only 5000 regular posters?

That's a great number!

I lurked here for months, even contributed and corresponded with Skinner a few times, before I started contributing. Now, I *love* it. Can't go a day without DU. Probably overdoing it. Anyway, if 5000 out of 98,000 registrations actually post, that's HUGH. I'm SERIES!

I figure only about half of the registered users actively browse... and ten percent of those take part in the discussions.

I used to only visit one day a week so I could catch up on Top Ten Conservative Idiots.

46. That's what I thought
Any way you look at it, that's a lot of "regular" posters. The real comedy is in a board with 33 regular posters ragging on Skinner for having "only" five thousand posters. If we can be sure that number is even accurate, since the guy doesn't provide his supposed secret message-board crawling script. Considering the source, I'd be inclined to think he'd be low-balling it rather than inflating the number.

92. Okay, so it's actually more than I thought...
Number of threads scanned: 8000
Number of posts scanned: 113340
Individual posters found: 5271
Average posts per poster: 21.502562

This is DOWN from 5389 last week.

-----

Okay, so first we have to ask, why was the scan limited to 8000 posts? And in marketing terms, a 2% return on any such effort is considered a very good return...right in line with what Skinner is getting.

Of course, all 33 of "them" have their knickers in a twist over this. Because they're stupid fucking morans.

Too bad they won't allow me to address them directly.

93. They only need .66% of one poster to match Skinner's return.
Edited on Fri Nov-17-06 06:08 PM by Atman
"Even if they have 5000 active members, only 800 donations really, really sucks."

Except for that it doesn't suck at all (Skinner is only looking for 1000 donations)...it is right in line with the typical 2% return expected of any such marketing outreach. Applying the same math to their joke board indicated only .66% of one poster would need to contribute in order for them to consider themselves "successful" if they were even to consider such a fund drive.

Are you Children thoroUghly humiliated yet?

7. some of us won't donate beause of the Google Ads
I live in the country so forced to use dial up but when I go from page to page on DU I have time to get a cup of coffee or use the bathroom. Each new page takes a long time to download. Why? It is because the of the Google video Ads at the top of each page. DU Admin is making a pretty penny from those Ads so they can do without my donation this quarter and any other time as long as those Ads run. Bet when I click 'post message' there is time to go out and feed the cat before the next page comes up!

86. No, The Number Is Fine. Your Interpretation Of It Isn't.
It says 98,255 registrations since January 2001. That just means that since 01/2001 that many usernames have been created. Many were repeat disruptors/freepers, many members since tombstoned and many that are members who may not have been here for years. The number is accurate, it just reflects how many sign-ups there have been since that time.

In your OP, however, you are insinuating that all 98,255 users are current and active members of our community, so therefore our donation numbers should be much higher. Using that number as a benchmark or data point for anything current would be really silly. It is just an historical count. It shows how many members this site has had during the course of its entire life. It isn't in any way saying that is how many members we CURRENTLY have in our community, and I believe you know that. Therefore, using that number as a comparison to our CURRENT donation activity is just completely meaningless.

Those of us who are monthly subscribers are not counted in that money. And, there's lots of us. Skinner told me this himself, so i know that's correct. Otherwise, the donation meter wouldn't start at zero. It would be at several hundred (maybe more) from moment one! I've been donating monthly for about 5 years, and i don't get counted. I don't get the little "i donated" thingie either, but i know i give every month.

I didn't even think of that. I suppose that's an even more reliable source of funding for DU.

48. Me too
I started the monthly donation shortly after I discovered this site and registered in 2003. A few months ago I emailed Skinner and asked if I could get another DU bumper sticker as the one I got when first donating was pretty rag tag by now. He was very gracious and acknowledged that monthly subscribers did not get the recognition they deserve, and soon after I got 2 new bumper stickers in the mail.

49. Professor, I donate monthly, and I get that banner.
I'm either a glitch in the system for getting the banner, or you are for not getting it.

50. The admins should fix it so that monthly donors show up
as having participated in the quarterly fund drive (without counting on the annoying trackbar.)

54. I think that's what I'm saying.
I get the "I donated" red text in my post headers from a montly donation, not a one-time drive donation.

As for whether my monthly donation counts in the quarterly numbers at the top of the page, I don't know.

I wonder if getting my "I donated" text comes from the timing of my monthly payment. If my recurring payment comes in during the drive, it counts. Maybe someone else making a monthly donation that recurs outside of the drive period doesn't get recognition.

57. I See It On Yours
But, it's not on mine, and i just talked to Skinner yesterday. (By PM) So, it's something weird. Maybe for people who've been paying monthly for a long time, don't trigger that icon.

60. Yep. I Think It's Timing
I got the PM from the admins about donating, and i sent Skinner a PM asking if that was a mistake. He said i wasn't supposed to get that letter, as monthly donators weren't supposed to get it. Maybe those of us who've been doing that a long time, slipped through the cracks.

64. I think so too
I donated during the first quarterly fund drive I saw on DU. Assuming the drives have been held the same time of year I am guessing that my monthly payment would then be recorded during the drives.

I know how you feel about the work situation.

I just accepted a severance package today where I work. So it meant I had extra to kick in this time, but I'm in limbo for work as of two weeks from today.

Here's hoping the new year sees better work (or at least paychecks) for both of us.

73. You are invoking moral superiority, telling people they are shameful if they didn't donate
While praising yourself for having donated.

There are already plenty of fundraising measures going on on the site.

We don't need people like you rubbing it in.

Do you honestly think that people who could donate and haven't are going to be swayed by your post? Like maybe they didn't realize this was the quarterly fundraiser?

Given that and by your choice of phrasing, this post was obviously an effort to chastise those who have not yet given.

108. I think you are reading just a BIT TO DEEPLY into the message.
The point is that there ARE people that CAN & SHOULD donate. Those people know who they are. They've got a little extra cash lying about that they know they can donate. Obviously not everyone can afford it nor is anyone OBLIGATED to.

It's just a verbal "kick in the pants" to remind those than are "contemplating" donating but just haven't done it.

I was procrastinating for a while, then I read a post that asked DUr's to please donate...so I finally did.

Nothing wrong with that. Nothing wrong with not donating. No big deal!

89. Would love to
But I am in the last quarter of my PhD and have lots of data, but not two pennies to rub together.

I did, however, become a card-carrying member of the DNC with my $25 donation a couple of months ago. I have never been more proud to carry ANY card knowing that it was Howard Dean's 50 state strategy I was supporting. I show it to people like a baby's photo with a big smile on my face.

When I graduate and get a job, I will be first in line to donate to DU. It is my favorite website, after all....but the DNC took priority this year.
