The Media has Lost Its Mind as the Republicans have Lost Control
Edited on Fri Nov-17-06 11:03 AM by Ioo
Cross Post on http://speciousreasoning.com/node/1591

I find it almost comical that the media is all a quiver about the fact that the second in command that Nancy Pelosi wanted, Representative John Murtha, was defeated and the front runner, Representative Steny Hoyer, was elected. The New York Times wrote today, “Nancy Pelosi has managed to severely scar her leadership even before taking up the gavel as the new speaker of the House.”

This is bullshit, lets us take a moment look at the fall of 1994, the Speaker Elect of the House was Newt Gingrich, and the newly elected Republicans were holding elections for the upcoming Congressional leadership posts. Newt, was throwing all his weight (And that is a lot, trust me) behind a man by the name of Robert Walker of Pennsylvania, for the position of Majority Leader. As the internal House election drew near, Newt was campaigning hard to get Robert the position, but as the votes were counted it was clear that he had failed and the position went to a rival of Newt’s, Tom DeLay. Almost the exact same situation as we have today. At the time the media said nothing about how Newt was damaged goods before he even got the job, none of it.

The right wing news media is so thrown off on how to spin the Democratic landslide; they have no idea what to do. They have sold their souls to the Republicans who have then turned around and lost the election. Right now the news media is seen as culpable of the failures of this administration and its Republican protectorates. The American people see the media not as the fourth estate doing its job to keep the government in check, but as an accomplice. The media is fearful of the wrath that the Democrats have the power to unleash, like the reestablishment of the “Fairness Doctrine”, or the halt to the very much desired media consolidation that the Republicans dangled in from of their faces.

You want proof of the media’s crimes, look no further than this story.

2. They're just chomping at the bitt to see Nancy fail as leader --
let them try - she's strong enough to take it and prove them wrong a thousand times over!

17. Nancy? Strong?
Not once - not even once have I heard them announce that Nancy won Speaker of the House by unanimous vote. Not. Even. Once. I had to learn it here.

That's the strength they fear.

They are trying desparately to hide how strong she really is, even while they look for sneaky, snarky dishonest ways to try to bring her down.

Wat.

3. truer than true.
The media has also been so sucked into stories of political celebrity, scandal, and gamesmanship that they've forgotten how to write stories about the issues! To hear them tell it, you wouldn't know laws even get passed in Congress, or that they have effects in the real world.

Great post.

I think she's pretty tough and practical. Of course there are several wings of the Party, and they need to be reconciled before January. That's exactly what's happening.

Those who are just too tainted, such as Harmon, have been properly passed over for top leadership positions. The MSM, unwilling to delve into the struggle to distance the Party from the AIPAC scandal, mischaracterizes this as a cat-fight.

I don't expect the MSM bad-mouthing to stop, of course. They're bought and paid-for by the multinational corporations.

So we get one week of the drama of taking both houses and then to maintain the screech level, they have to say aliens kidnapped Madonna's adopted child the Dems are going down in flames.

8. I didn;t know about Walker-great post. The media barely covered the corruption
other than to mention when someone was arrested or convicted (aside from Delay but then everyone had him on to tell them about how he had nothing to do with the Republican loss) and yet still corruption was the #1 or #2 issue in every single exit poll. Every single one.

"lets us take a moment look at the fall of 1992, the Speaker Elect of the House was Newt Gingrich, and the newly elected Republicans were holding elections for the upcoming Congressional leadership posts."

In the elections of 1992, Democrats retained control of the House.

It wasn't until the elections of 1994 that the Rethugs took control of the House.

13. And when they elected Boner to replace Delay
weren't there initally more ballots cast then there were voting members? I seem to remember a small blurb about that and they had to revote before it was decided.

They are talking about it because they have nothing else to talk about. Period.

14. Even before this election, the Repubs set out to demonize Pelosi..
Even though 60% of the voters had never heard of her. Now, they media is carrying their water. But, your historical analogy is right on. It should be sent to all the news organizations - for whatever good it might do...

15. Yep. Rightwing Nooz-o-ganda is scrambling to develop an anti-Dem
narrative that will resonate w/ the public. Anything to divert attention from the failures of the Bush administration and the rubber-stamp 109th Congress, and the Democratic landslide the swept the latter out of power. Why? Because the corporate media like the tax breaks and deregulation they can count on getting from Republicans. Now, if we were political pragmatists here (and most of the time I'm glad we're not), we might suggest that Dem congress-critters should support similar measures--in a sense beating the Repubs at their own media-licking game--but I doubt that even Dem promises of eabig tax-cuts and further consolidation would sway the big Nooz-o-ganda parent corporations to alter the anti-Dem narrative.

34. Media Whores to their "Center" whatever that is...mostly protecting them
from Media Re-regulation. Media wants "Locked Government" where they can stealthily get through their hopes for "Internet Control" through getting Repugs to shoot down "Net Neutrality."

Media has millions of dollars invested in the Best and Brightest of Paid
Consultants...they can attack Dems figuring that enough Dino's like Lieberman will come on Board to help them. If they attack hard enough and focus on 2008 when even more Repug Seats become vulnerable. They LOVE THE REPUGS but just threw a little bone to us Dems...so they would seem "balanced."
