Quick, where is Mongolia?

If you don't know, do me and everyone else a favor. Get a globe and study it. Just fucking LOOK at it for a while. You don't have to memorize every little detail, but please get to know the general locations of countries. Know that Japan is in Asia, for example. Know that Italy is the one that looks like the boot.

It's embarrassing. The freeptards who support the Iraq war can't even find it on the goddamn map.

22. I not only know where it is, I have a friend who spent

summer before last there with his whole family. Lived with one of the tribes.

I've got a good one for you. My husband is from Holland. Even though he's been here a lot of years, he still has an accent. A couple days ago a woman who works where he does (different shifts so they don't run across each other very often) finally noticed this and asked where he was from. He told her and had her remark 'oh, then you've seen wild kangaroos'.

They are 10 and 14, and they don't seem to know a whole lot about geography. Don't they teach it anymore?

I haven't seen them looking at it much, and my 14-year old especially would roll her eyes if I quizzed her or made her study it, but hopefully they will look at it from time to time.

The first order of business on day one is to make sure that all the students know the location of the country/countries whose language they are learning. I still remember my first day of Spanish class. "Yes, you're studying the language of Mexico, but it's not called Mexican; it's called Spanish. Spanish originated in Spain and was brought..."

I started doing things like that after one of my students kept referring to Japan as "down there."
