Edited on Fri Nov-17-06 07:34 PM by jackstraw45
I didn't realize he was 70 until I read it today. Reagan was 69 in 1980....age/health will no doubt be an issue in 2008.

22. If McCain were elected and served two terms,
he would be 80 and the end of his 2nd term. Gore would be 68 under the same scenario.

5. From now on: "70-year-old John McCain."
Never refer to him any other way.

"70-year-old John McCain said..."

"70-year-old John McCain went to..."

"70-year-old John McCain insisted that..."

Blog it everywhere and watch it be an issue in minutes.

Somehow, 70 is just a number. "Septuagenarian" is more like "someone who once could have been president."

Rudy G has MAJOR character issues. His numbers have only ONE way to go.

Frist? Hahahaha

George Allen? Hahahaha

Tommy Thompson - Mr. Medicare act? hahaha

Those GOP primary debates are going to be classics.

Meanwhile, on OUR side, we could have folks like Edwards, Gore, Clinton, Obama, Vilsack

2008 is looking good SO FAR... :)

42. You're right they're weak, except for the one you didn't mention -
Romney. There is a quiet groundswell amongst the right for him, and I can see him rolling to the nomination partly on the basis of the fact that all the others ARE too weak and/or have issues of non-electability of one sort or another. (And yes the OP is right - McCain would be a theoretical possibility - except for the fact he is just too old - and has NOT been aging well in recent years.)

I wonder what Mr. "Straight Talk" McCain had to say about his president after Chimpy told the press that Rummy was staying but later fired his sorry ass when the GOP got "thumped".

McCain is lower than deep sea shrimp shit.

Edited on Fri Nov-17-06 09:06 PM by Julien Sorel
McCain is a name because the media have put him on a pedestal for the past 6 - 8 years, but when you look at the guy he has a lot of flaws that will come out in a big campaign. It's one thing to go on the talking head shows once a week and bask in the adulation of the likes of Russert or Stephanopoulos, who lob you softball questions and smile inanely at your "straight talk" answers, but a 72 year old, and a not all that healthy 72 year old at that, is going to run into trouble over the course of a grueling 18 month campaign. And the minute a crack appears in McCain's chummy relationship with the media, all his flaws will come spilling out. I think the media are going to think twice about doing in 2008 what they did in 2000 -- cover candidates in such a dishonest way that the media end up deciding the election. Without the uniquivacol support of the media, McCain is just an old man from a smallish state, a guy who's been in the senate for waaay too long, and so has a lot of votes to defend, a guy with a record of pandering and flip flopping that would do anyone proud. The biggest gift the Republicans could give us would be a McCain nomination, and I don't think they're that stupid.

37. Dementia can strike quickly at that age
I've seen a lot of Alzheimer's and dementia patients. Age related dementia can start slowly or it can move quickly. The office is too important to risk electing someone who could be out of it in 8 years.

38. It can strike at any age.
Dementia affects one person in 20 over the age of 65 and one person in five over the age of 80.

I see your point, but some of the smartest people I've ever met were in their seventies and eighties.

Age bias is unfair.

46. Yes. Everyone knows the arguments for and against the Invasion of Iraq.
Edited on Sat Nov-18-06 09:42 AM by patrice
And most people have made up their minds.

As fair as I can try to be, the arguments for this Invasion of another sovereign country just don't add up to enough benefit to the U.S. (unless you're a multi-national corporation and/or MSM).

Ergo, anyone who has ever voted for this thing is not in touch with reality and needs to think about their own attitudes that affect their perceptions abnormally.

I work pretty hard at not being an absolutist, but it's unavoidable with the Invasion of Iraq; it is so clearly DOING HARM to the U.S.

The World is at least partly what we make it by our actions.
