How do I uninstall IE 7?
I despise it. I went to Control Panel, but I don't see how to uninstall it and reinstall IE 6. Thanks.

1. Just download and use Firefox instead.
It's a much better browser. About 1% of sites require IE, so you can just keep it on the system for that rare occasion when you need it.

26. Nomad is right--IE 7 was made to be uninstalled easily
Edited on Fri Nov-17-06 09:10 PM by Maeve
I foolishly installed the Yahoo! version this morning, got totally disgusted and uninstalled using the Control Panel/Add-Remove utility and went back to IE 6, no fuss, no loss, no other step (well, re-boot, but that's part of any major change). Didn't lose anything but the irritation. And yeah, I run XP, too--XP PRO, to be specific, but Hubby is in the biz and says it shouldn't be different for regular XP.

HOWEVER--I also have Firefox and prefer it as my regular browser. IE is good for some things and some sites, but Firefox kills a lot more pop-ups!

Well, you cannot uninstall it! Your OS uses it. But you can use something else to BROWSE the internet. Get fiefox and set it to default.

5. First, go to the Firefox Web site.
Then, download the latest Firefox.

Install it, per instructions.

When MS Windows asks if you are sure that you want to make Firefox your default browser, respond affirmatively.

That's all. No more IE security worries. Plus, you'll have a better browser.

20. What Are "We" Talking About Here?? I Got A Notification From
Windows about IE7, but I'm afraid to do ANYTHING without someone talking me through it! I use Windows XP 2000 Pro. Is everyone here saying that Apple is better, or Mozilla is better, or is Apple with Mozilla? And dare I ask about Opera??

I think I need to print out a lot of instruction, I'm afraid to mess up my PC. And what does it do to your email like Outlook and all the other programs you have already? What about Favorites??

I think I just asked somebody to re-do my computer for me. If I sound like a DOOFUS I am, but I had this thing built for me and I'm scared! And if I'm asking too much... JUST IGNORE ME!

I caqn understand that too!

25. No offense, I just didn't get what you meant when you said "not Microsoft
but Windows..."

If you have XP you can't 'uninstall' IE. It is part of the kernal that makes Windoze work...you can use any browser and keep Outlook/outlook express for your email client...or you can grab any of a hundred others most of which are free and use one of them but as far as 'cleaning out' either IE or outlook from your computer, it just can't be done without wrecking the 'operating system'.

32. Not Microsoft but Windows
I can explain It to you

Internet Explorer 7 Is "Windows Internet Explorer 7"
Not "Microsoft Internet Explorer 7"

And "Windows Internet Explorer 7" can be removed completely from your XP system.

50. IT SUCKS!
I got suckered into downloading the Yahoo version as well. It screws up everything. You have to download add-ons that weren't included with the IE7 download (shockwave, flash etc.).......the thing is a TOTAL pain in the ass. AT least it was for me. I finally got everything to work correctly but it took me a while.
My advice: DON'T DOWNLOAD IT. Stick with IE6 if you can. If you have windows automatic updates enabled, turn it off or it will constantly advise you to download it. That way you can pick and choose what updates you want. I update once a week at a time of my own choosing, screw their automatic updates.

7. Go to your Control Panel and it is not the programs on the list you
get but look over to the left where it says Windows componets. Click on it and take the check mark out for Internet Explorer and that will remove it. I think it will automatically go back to your previous explorer.

11. You're right, it is integrated so tightly into Windoze Explorer there is no way
to "UNINSTALL" it. The best thing you ca do is to ignore it and use something else, like I do...although there is the RARE occasion when it's the only browser that will open a particular page.

24. As a Microsoft developer, let me provide a warning
If you uninstall IE (any version), you can lose functionality in some applications. There are few of them nowadays that use the Internet OCX's built by Microsoft, but just to be sure, go here http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/ and download Firefox. After a day or two of using it, you will never go back to the crappy IE. It will even pull your Favorites list over (called Bookmarks in Firefox).

Also, turn of automatic updates. Twice I've had an "update" set IE7 as the default browser.

29. No answer, but a warning
I had the same experience when I downloaded IE6 way back when. I hated it because it changed all kinds of functions that I had become familiar with.
When we tried to uninstall it, the computer froze and went to the blue screen of death, so I shut it down. When I tried to restart my computer, all I got was a black screen with a blinking cursor at the top left corner. It killed my entire OS.
Had to call Microsoft, buy 6 months worth of tech support and have them send me a new install disk for Windows.

It was such a hassle, I dont think I'll ever upgrade IE again, for fear I might hate it and not be able to unistall it.

If you really hate it that much, I agree with some of the posters upthread, just install a completely different browser and set it to be your default browser.

Control Panel
Add or Remove Programs
Windows Internet Explorer 7
Remove.

This will remove IE7 and restore IE6. The uninstall works just fine.

If instead you just want to gripe about Microsoft products - 'kay.

I'm not the most computer-savvy poster around (don't have to be--Hubby and Sons are alpha-geeks), but I did exactly that and no trouble whatsoever.

Again, I use both Firefox and IE. Both work, each works better for some sites.

For web pages that only display correctly in Internet Exploder, err, Explorer, use the IE Tab extension. Just right-click anywhere on the page and select 'View page in IE Tab'.
