Poll question: I need your advice
Edited on Fri Nov-17-06 10:34 PM by 133724
I finally overcame my denial and decided that I need to get a walking cane. My arthritus is finally getting the better of me. (Don't be alarmed because I have good medical coverage and I am being treated for the problem).

However; given the current tazings; assaults and other problems that may crop up I would like your advice on some of the candidates for a walking stick.

It rains a lot in Seattle

I am tending to #1

1. Um - #2....
Do you fence? (440 Stainless Steel Square cut Blade for fencing) cause that one is pretty bitching.

4. Never took fencing
but I did hit a lot of home runs in Jr High & High School. But that was like in the '60's ( i don't remember much about that time).

8. 60's....born in the 60's
but my fuzzy times were the 80's. I did a lot of kicking butt (soccer - played until I was 34) and have blown a knee. Starting to feel it on wet, moist days. When I get to the point of needing one, I'd pick #2. It's like so James Bond.

3. If you are having trouble with balance
While stylish, these canes don't always offer the necessary support.
You might want to consider a quad cane.

Good luck.

7. A little too geriatric for me I am only 57.
The problems isn't balance it is pain in the hip & knee. I need something to lean on once in a while when I walk.

But I'll *(&%)&* if I will let some one get tazed like that college kid in my presence.

6. #1 is good looking but pricey. You might do better at Amazon.
I was looking the other day because there are too many off leash dogs on the beach and was looking for something I can carry to protect me and the kid.

9. I have a flair for drama plus creativity in using ordinary objects
found around the house. A few years from now when I need a cane, I'll just use:

10. i had inflammatory rheumatoid arthritis and froze up.. i found the 2 amino acids relieved all ;my
symptoms... in a week or 2.. a 75%/25% 1 gram cap of Arginine and Ornathine.. i took 2 or 3 grams a day for 2 weeks and them one a day and then after about 4 months i quit taking it as a 'control' and it took about 3 months for it to come back.. so i decided to take it 3 times a week, but it is so non toxic you cant physically eat enough to hurt you.. it is non patentable and dirt cheap so you doctor is baned by law from telling you about it. arginine and anything are precursors of T-cell Receptor Inhibitors.. it is the T-cells that cause arthritis by attacking the joints, it is an
auto-immune disease.. the t-cell inhibitors help the T-cells identify you and prevent them from attack your joints.

i have been symptom fee for 20 years..

shop around on the net and you can find it cheap.. but get the one gram caps, i got mine first from Vitamin Research Products.. vrp.com, you can get it in bulk powder use a measuring spoon, it tastes like sweet baking power.

first go to the library and look up arginine/anything in the handbook of physics and chemistry and some other reference books, they will help you there.. both amino acids are part of an essential process called the 'arginine anything cycle' which is what eleminates urea from your blood

if you have arthritus you CAN NOT drink alcohol, you need to drink a lot of water

11. Go number 1
It has been said "A man without a blackthorn stick is a man without an expedient."

Hip replacements these days are amazing. This is one area that modern medicine really has been astounding.
I have a friend who waited for years to get his hip replaced and now feels like he has a new lease on life. If that's your situation and you can I'd recommend consideration of this.

Best

14. Make a statement with your cane
I would say have it be a symbol of who you are, something you're happy to walk around with. Seems a very personal decision to me. Good luck!

17. I have two blackthorns. they are great but they aren't as stable in
the handle as a regular cane. new canes come with color. the coolest cane I ever saw was an older man who had attached a rod and line to his and would fish whenever he had the chance. :) get something stable.

19. I've got two or three of those also.
unfortunately they don't help me with my balance; and I am afraid to eat anything that i would catch in Puget Sound.

i would have to drive about 50 miles & walk three or four miles before I would want to eat anything I caught.

but I like the idea since I am semi retired....

20. Hmmm...
I've considered a cane recently for momentary bouts of imbalance. I have several days or weeks where my sense of balance sucks, and then afterwards I'm back to normal...I'm going to the doc in a couple of weeks to explore further. However, I've looked into walking assistance, and have considered a folding cane. I don't know if this would be appropriate for you. Have you tried this site, http://www.goldviolin.com/SearchResults.asp?Cat=42 ?

22. It's also important to USE the cane properly. I had a physical therapist
literally show me how to walk with and carry and use my cane properly after the most recent incident with the knee and the dog. It turns out I really handicapped myself with improper use of the walking stick. After he showed me the proper gait and carriage, it made a lot of difference.

I also found that I like a cane that can fold up and put in my luggage... since I don't always need it.

BTW, a cane is nice for getting instant wheelchair service in airports. VERY nice on international flights.
