(11-17) 17:53 PST SAN DIEGO, (AP) --

More than 10 million gallons of untreated sewage have poured into San Diego Bay over the past two years from a Navy barracks near the waterfront, officials said Friday.

The waste entered the bay from a storm drain that was linked to barracks at Naval Base San Diego. The barracks, built in 2004, house more than 1,000 sailors.

Navy Seabees discovered the leak Friday while building bathrooms, said Lt. Kyle Raines.

"This was the first we'd seen of it," Raines said.

Local environmental groups expressed dismay.

"It's not as bad as having a 10 million gallon spill all at once, but the fact that this has been going for that long in the same place is of huge concern," said Gabriel Solmer, a spokeswoman for San Diego Coastkeeper.

7. Sorta like the nuclear plant they just happened to notice has been leaking
radioactive water into the ground water for the last decade or so, just up the coast. Nothing to see. Nothing to concern yourself with.

8. We have a friend stationed at that particular base.
From the stories he tells, I'm not surprise by this story at all.

9. Hey... the military has..
been the worst polluter in the country/world for years.

Whether it's the Navy accidentally dumping sewage into a bay or the purposeful use of Agent Orange overseas, the US shits in our nest on a regular basis.

I remember talking to a WWII submarine sailor who worked decommissioning subs in San Diego. He talked about dumping all kinds of stuff into the bay... oils... transformer material.... asbestos...

Whether they still do it on purpose or not isn't clear. There certainly are a lot of "oops", tho.
