For instance, the platform of this particular candidate on economic issues:
- The right to a useful and remunerative job in the industries or shops or farms or mines of the nation;
- The right to earn enough to provide adequate food and clothing and recreation;
- The right of every farmer to raise and sell his products at a return which will give him and his family a decent living;
- The right of every businessman, large and small, to trade in an atmosphere of freedom from unfair competition and domination by monopolies at home or abroad;
- The right of every family to a decent home;
- The right to adequate medical care and the opportunity to achieve and enjoy good health; (National single-payer health care program or some other workable system)
- The right to adequate protection from the economic fears of old age, sickness, accident, and unemployment; (Stop raiding Social Security Fund to cover up the deficits; adopt measures to ensure long-term solvency)
- The right to a good education. (Subsidized education for all who qualify for university; higher education standards in public schools, smaller classroom sizes, more qualified teachers, emphasis on education instead of simply "teaching to the test")
This list above is a legacy left to America over 60 years ago. It was left by FDR in his 11th State of the Union Address to Congress. It came to be known as the Economic Bill of Rights. All I did was tweak some of the wording to make it more relevant to today's environment.
http://www.worldpolicy.org/globalrights/econrights/fdr-econbill.htmlThe things I'd add to the list are
- The right to freedom of information (Fairness Doctrine or something that works)
- The right to economic democracy (A federal program established with the specific goal of purchasing failed or failing firms, reorganizing them, and relaunching them as worker co-operatives where workers are also owners free to enjoy the fruits of their own labor)
- The right to mass transit (A federal program establishing bullet-train lines between major cities, the purchasing of bus fleets for municipalities, and the construction of light-rail networks to alleviate urban/suburban gridlock; pretty much a modern day equivalent of a public works program)
- The right to renewable energy that does not increase warming of the planet or destroy the environment
Could this person be elected in today's environment?
