15. That there's been even one makes me indescribably sad.
And stymied. How can anyone hesitate to shout, "Absolutely!"?

Rhetorical question, but. :(

3. Maybe? If they stay away from me?
I can't imagine someone choosing that answer, but obviously someone did. Probably just to be funny.

I hope.

5. I guess the point of this is to ask
how people can turn away from a very real need only because the government chooses to call it something other than what it truly is.

hunger is hunger. It is not anything else they may wish to call it to buttercup it and wrap it up in cellophane.

hunger is hunger, and it exists every minute of every day - in this wonderful country.

it isn't right, morally or ethically or in any other way to lie about it.

It's in front of your face if you just open your eyes.

Your brothers and sisters are hungry.

What are you going to do about it?

6. These are" food insecurity" people
W has determined there is no way to measure hunger, just food security. There is no such thing as a hungry person any longer. The GOP have eliminated and renamed these people based on their food security/insecurity level.

11. No, W just measures them now by security level
As I said, he said hunger couldn't be measured so he changed it to food security levels. Makes it sound so cold and statistical. Good for graph purposes. People are no longer hungry, they are just "food insecure".

12. apparently, it happens
check out who is in congress right now, and what paths they follow.

apparently, a lot of people run for office not supporting "that" and a lot of people vote for those people. otherwise, this country wouldn't be digging out of the shithole that it is in.

thanks for responding, BTW. I appreciate it very much.

13. I just bought a new dishwasher.
With my truck parked outside my door, I went out to smoke. Some guy came by and asked if he could please have the box from the dishwasher to live in. Of course, I let him have the box. The guy spoke almost no English but I speak some, limited Spanish. Yeah, he was probably an illegal alien. I gave him the box, a blanket, a pad to sleep on and $20.00. Frankly, I don't care what country or background this guy came from, I have an abundance and this guy is grateful for a box. How pathetic is that, in our "richest nation on earth?"

Don't get me wrong. I live in downtown San Jose, California. I get hit up 15 to 20 times a day for cigarettes or change. My general attitude is "Fuck you, get a job. That's how I can afford smokes!, I work!" This was different. The guy, in his limited English, asked for the box off my truck so he could have a place to sleep this evening. The very fact that this happens in my country makes me cry, and I am a tough as nails, 56 year old construction worker.

Jesus Christ! How far have we sunk.

20. No. Either grow or kill your own food or die.
Of course I support feeding hungry people. I always give money to the local homeless shelter so that the unfortunate can eat on Thanksgiving and my Eagles tailgate group always donates a couple hundred dollars worth of can goods to the poor on game days in November. What's sad is the amount of food we waste in this country. From the crappiest McDonald's to the best five star restaurant in the country, there is always food thrown away while people starve. The amount of food that gets tossed in a single day at Disney world could feed 100 families for a month. Feed the hungry and clothe the naked only seems to apply to certain people.

22. We donate surplus produce.
My husband loves gardening, & we donate anything we won't use to Plant A Row for the Hungry. Why would we let it go to waste when someone can use it? I don't understand that.

26. Yes, a poll with an obvious answer here at DU, but revealing.
Revealing inasmuch as there have been several posters who have been outed. If you wanted poll whose question would reveal who the real trolls and freepers here are at DU, this would be a good one. We don't know who all the ones who voted other than "yes" may be, but in their cases let's hope that what goes around comes around for them because that would certainly be justice. They could never be heart donors since they lack one. I do hope they were simply being sarcastic but that if their children are ever hungry, somebody feeds them.

28. Absolutely.
I happen to be a food security engineer...serving 200-240 meals a week to the ill and elderly. There are people who aren't eligible for our program because they are younger (under 60). There are weekly food giveaways that are some help to them - but these don't cover all nutritional needs. Each of our towns here have farmer's markets - so it is possible to buy fresh fruits and vegetables by the piece instead of the pound.

Many of the local churches and other groups take turns providing meals at the central shelter - again, not all problems are solved, but 'hunger' is an issue that does get a good deal of local attention.
Next week, each town will host a Thanksgiving dinner -open to all comers for free.
