Just saw my first Gardasil commercial! Yay!
Edited on Sat Nov-18-06 04:01 AM by Sapphocrat
Despite my fondness for 1) Bob, the guy who impresses everybody at the pool party with his big, new erection thanks to some male-whateveritis-enhancement pill, and 2) the cute little balloon that is very, very depressed until it discovers Zoloft, I HATE drug commercials. Mostly I hate having to hear about side effects ranging from kidney damage to diarrhea to four-hour erections while I'm eating dinner in front of the TV. I also hate U.S. pharmaceutical companies in general because they're greedy bastards who make far too much money and prevent Americans from getting cheaper drugs from Canada. (OTOH, I love them too, for without their products, my mother would be dead).

But I digress.

I just saw an ad for Gardasil -- Merck's brand name for the series of injections designed to prevent cervical cancer in pre-... pre-inter... in young women who haven't had sex yet. There was a bunch of strong, practically fierce-looking young women in a gym (looking much healthier than girls in the gym scene in "Rock 'N' Roll High School"), pushing the importance of this thing.

It made me really, really happy. Not seeing girls in a gym, you perverts -- I mean, finally seeing an HPV vaccine advertised on television.

Maybe it doesn't seem like such a big deal to those too young to remember when even condom commercials were completely taboo -- but it is a big deal.

Fuck you, Radical Right. You didn't stop science. We will not allow our young women to suffer needlessly because of your baseless histrionics.

On edit: Stupid typos, as usual

2. Shame about the brand name, that's all
Because it does make you think of Clearasil, which has roughly the same target market. At what point does a drug company choose brand names?

3. FRC and the Perkins cult....
...are the reason why it took so long to get this vaccine out, you can bet the bank they are the reason why there is no cure for HIV/AIDS yet or other STDS for that matter.

Read "Letter to a Christian Nation", because Harris brings this up and in a "finger in their face" way.
