McCain's "more troops needed" comment and 2008 |
|
I believe this comment, that Iraq needs more troops at this stage of the game, will be a drag on his presidential candidacy. If I can recall, something like 8% of Americans would support bringing in more troops at this stage of the occupation. Intuitively and rationally the vast majority of Americans understand that this just won't work. Injecting more troops would kill more American soldiers and only further the chaos.
Why is McCain advocating this now? It makes no sense. If it were somehow approved, this move would be deeply unpopular as those troops would have to come from reserves and the national guard, or worse, some kind of involuntary action. This won't play well in Topeka as those guys go back over there (again!) Beyond unpopular, it's stupid as hell.
Can anyone shed some light on why he believes this is smart politicking?

1. Maybe it will hurt his campaign, but probably not |

Issues don't matter to the typical voter as much as image. As long as the media portrays McCain as a maverick instead of a flip-flopping nut, he will have strong approval among the general public.
I still think the best way to defeat McCain is by saying that he's too old for the job.
