Exactly why is Tom Cruise's marriage "breaking news"? |
|
MSNBC broke into regular programming to show the outside of the castle where the marriage is taking place, with big"BREAKING NEWS!" fanfare. Then the commentator announced they THINK Tom and whomever are now officially married.
I never cease to be astounded at the farcical nature of American "news". Just when it seems they can't dumb it down any further... :eyes:

3. Because that's what the public is interested in. |
|
If the public was NOT interested in stupid crap like this, we wouldn't have six million mindless magazines and TV shows based on exactly that.
Mindless blather sells, even if we're not interested in it. Unfortunately, many, many, MANY people are.

9. But I wonder if the media provided us with real news and interesting |
|
commentary, whether people wouldn't rise to the higher level. People are so used to drivel that it's what they've come to expect and like. Same as those who go to McDonald's every night. They don't know what good food tastes like, so they THINK they prefer junk.

15. Celebrity worship has been around roughly as long as celebrities |
|
I think there has always been - and will always be - a segment of the population that is more interested in that than in "real" news. Myriad alternatives are already available, and real news is available to anyone who seeks it. Some people just have no interest in trying very hard to find it. Or are simply disinterested in reality.

and relegated to the Entertainment Section.
Why is it this important now? Because of the 24/7 media?

32. TV has become "merely wires and lights in a box" |
|
Edward R. Murrow (from "Good Night, And Good Luck") talking about the future of television:
"To those who say people wouldn't look; they wouldn't be interested; they're too complacent, indifferent and insulated, I can only reply: There is, in one reporter's opinion, considerable evidence against that contention. But even if they are right, what have they got to lose? Because if they are right, and this instrument is good for nothing but to entertain, amuse and insulate, then the tube is flickering now and we will soon see that the whole struggle is lost. This instrument can teach, it can illuminate; yes, and it can even inspire. But it can do so only to the extent that humans are determined to use it to those ends. Otherwise it is merely wires and lights in a box. Good night, and good luck."
Were it not for Keith Olbermann, Mr. Murrow would be turning over in his grave by now.

33. Because every wedding involves frying pans for women and untrustworthy men. |
|
:eyes:
Seriously.... the vows involve admonishing the groom to buy the women "frills" like frying pans and combs and cats.
And the women are told not to expect men to keep promises, which no doubt casts a wonderful glow upon an exchange of vows.

28. Exactly. Like, WTF do we care about Paris Hilton or Madonna's baby? |
|
I agree totally. I figure Madonna lets the TV network show her films for free, almost all of which have been ranked "worst movie of the year" in each of the years they were released. Is there ANYONE ASKING to see "Who's that Girl" on HBO?
Thanks to these publicists, I'm thinking, we're supposed to think there are like, what, 10-15 celebrities in the WORLD?
..and just why the FUCK should I care about Nichole Richie? Does she act, sing, dance, write, etc?
It honestly makes me sad when I think of the thousands of actors and actresses wanting to get noticed, wanting a chance - actors with REAL talent.
I'm not saying that Tom Cruise doesn't have ability, but I think things are WAY out of proportion.

Mostly, I just leave it on when I'm cooking. I have seen way too much about this shit. Did you know that she spent $12,000 on underwear for the wedding? (!!!!)
This damned wedding is going to cost 9 million dollars!
It's time for another French Revolution. Let's just get rid of all these worthless genetic celebrities, off with their heads. I don't care if he's a Democrat (or so he thinks). He and whatshername are two talentless overpaid hacks that tear down our society by turning its values upside down.

I get my news from the internet but I go to the print media, the newspapers that have websites.
You should too.
