Where was the freaking LEADERSHIP?
WHY did it take the progressive netroots to get an Alito filibuster on the political map? Where was Harry freaking "keep your powder dry" Reid?
WHY weren't the Senate Democrats and the DNC ready when the Alito nomination came down the pike with a coordinated strategy that would frame Alito as the out-of-step, anti-individual rigths, pro-corporate far-right extremist that he is?
WHY did 19 Democrats vote IN FAVOR of imperial power for George W Bush, and in favor of turning back the clock on worker's rights, environmental regulation and a woman's right to choose?
WHY are so many of the people who allegedly represent us in the people's Congress such craven, careerist cowards? I was once a big fan of Robert Byrd, but the man is 200 freaking years old--is his personal reelection more important than the preservation of the system of checks and balances?

Okay. Rant off.

1. There is NO leadership on EITHER side!!!
We are adrift in a sea of friggin' cheese! The Dems are clearly rudderless, and Dick's sneer and Dubya's boy howdy smirk do not equal leadership.

2. Why is there no single party leader?
I've never understood this.

You have a leader in the House. A leader in the Senate. And a leader in the DNC.

Who's considered the leader? Who's the final arbiter of policies and stategies?

8. Rivalry
I have been sensing some rivalry between Reid, Pelosi and Dean. Could that be the problem? Caught up in feuding and letting us be eaten by wolves.Great time to let us down.

3. DLC against fillibuster
For the same reason and others, we do not think Senate Democrats should try to filibuster this confirmation. A filibuster is certain to fail; indeed, the Senate is certain to respond to a filibuster by outlawing them permanently in judicial confirmations. Using this weapon now would stake Democrats to the implausible argument that Alito's inevitable confirmation is the most egregious act of the Bush administration and the Republican Senate, going into a critical midterm election.

5. Good points. The DLC is useless. Markos of DKos even reduced the chapter
he was going to write in Crashing The Gates on the DLC to a few paragraphs to show how marginal they are now.

7. No, the DLC is very useful in rendering the Democratic party powerless.
That is their goal.

To let the Republican policies go through.
