Chanting: "Will be nice. Will be nice. Will be nice."
Ah, screw it.

On one of my author email loops, someone was commenting on some process available to authors to get their works up on Microsoft's live bookview thingy...whatever it is. It allows people to do text searches and may help promote their books. The discussion was whether only publishers, or the writers themselves, could put their work in the database.

Anyway, I noticed the comment "WaLa, they can."

I saw "WaLa" and thought, :wtf:

Then it hit me. She means "voila!" The exclaimation.

Why an author would do this escaped me until I noticed her sig line. She's a "Christian" author.

I know. I know. It makes me bad. Very bad. But I must admit to an "aha!" moment. Evil me.

But jeebus on crutches. WaLa? What kind of author would actually WRITE that?

Ugh.

I'm literally appalled.

I know I'll get, and probably deserve, some flack for this, but I just couldn't help myself. My brain just can't handle the contradiction without some explanation.

Author..."WaLa."

:banghead:

2. You didn't expect her to write a FRENCH word, did you?
I have to admit that when I saw that word ("Wa-La"), my mind immediately jumped to a lot of not-nice conclusions. I guess that makes us snooty elitists? :toast:

4. Weird stuff like this
makes me CRAZY.

I wanted to respond on-list, but thought it would show very bad character...It would be mean. But I had to say something to someone about it before my head exploded.

Argh!

3. You know, I've often wondered if I should become one of those.
Christian writing is often quite weak and poorly edited. It might get me published, at least. Of course, I would have to write stuff I don't like with literal Deus ex machina at the end of every book, but it might be fun. ;)

WaLa. That is priceless. I will have to tell that to some friends.

5. Slightly more evolved and still wrong: "viola!"
I have seen "Wala" before. Amazing.

6. I didn't realize I'd accidentally transposed the letters
until you pointed it out.

That's a typo. "WaLa" is most certainly not.

9. No, you spelled it correctly.
Some people actually spell it viola, and I have heard it PRONOUNCED "veeola", by someone who wsn't kidding!

10. Oh, okay...

LOL.

I thought you were saying I'd transposed it.

And, yeah...that's actually how I remember how to spell some things...by remembering it phonetically.

on edit: Though I'd pronounce "voila" as "Voy-la," not Vee-o-lah."

7. Could be a joke
I sign off on IM with "chow". I think I'm being humorous but I've been corrected many times. I know how to spell ciao.

11. I'm really hoping that's what it is.
But I think signing off with "Chow" is more obviously a joke...

13. Could be
Personally, if I were trying to be funny with voila, I would spell it "walla".

8. WaLa? WTF is that?
Do Christian authors have their own language or something?

14. I see... but what is their issue with the French and the Italian?
I am Sicilian-American myself. Color me ignorant but it seems that fundies have issues with the French, where does that come from?

15. The French are pretty secular...
Have been for a long time. Fundies don't like that. Plus, when they WEREN'T overtly secular, they were Catholic. Again, something the fundies don't like.

They're also notoriously rude, apparently. My wife says they're not IF you speak French when you're there. If you don't, they can treat you pretty crappy.

But as far as the languages go--it was more along the lines of a joke corresponding by something another poster in this thread said early on.
