Shoes
Don't forget to donate shoes and boots to homeless shelters, especially this time of year.

For three years now, I have been harping about shoes.

I even wrote a short story about it, based on a real event, and won a ridiculously huge Templeton award in 2004 for it.

You can read the short story here if you wish: http://www.templeton.org/powerofpurpose/winners/printer_mcmann.html

But I'd rather you just gave away some shoes.

Please kick and rec for our homeless friends and those in need.

Thanks, friends.

3. Even easier, I find is gloves
You can keep several pairs with you, hand them out as needed... guaranteed good feeling and very practical, immediate help.

23. You can get an endless supply of those one-size-fits-all
Edited on Sun Nov-19-06 12:28 AM by tblue37
stretchy gloves for under a dollar a pair. They are small when not worn, so you can carry several pairs of them with you to hand out whenever you see the need.

Thanks for the idea. I will stock up this week!

7. Shoes, Boots, Clothes, Suits, Blankets, Food, Money, Coats, Time And Respect.
I'd ask that those on DU or anywhere else for that matter donate any of those things. Just always donate in whatever ways you can.

I fear this is going to be one of the hardest winters for the homeless in years.

22. Don't forget your unused coats, scarves and warm socks.
They make all the difference up here. Gloves, as well. And sweaters, long johns, knit hats.

27. I feel for you...
Brrrr.

I live in Arizona now, but spent the previous 36 years in Michigan, along the west coast where the snowfall rivals Buffalo, NY. I send stuff northward now, whenever I can, though winter nights in the valley of the sun can get down into the 30s, sometimes the upper 20s here.

29. Kicking this up for anyone who missed it yesterday.
And believe it or not, here in Fairbanks we rarely have any homeless folks freeze to death; those that do are usually very intoxicated. It's a sad fate, and most of our homeless are veterans or Alaska Natives. Makes me wonder where our humanity went.

30. What we used to do
We would clean up our shoes that were in good condition and put new strings, etc. in them and go to where the homeless were in Dallas and tie the strings together so that they were paired, and leave them on the sidewalk where their stuff was.
I find that many don't always go to the shelters and this gives them access as well.
Great idea! And congrats on the award.
