Let's use some examples:

A guy waits in the parking lot of a bar for a black person to come out so he can assault them? Not a specific black person he has a beef with, just any black person will do. Is that a hate crime? Pretty much everyone would say yes.

Ok, a guy waits in the parking lot of a bar for someone he thinks is gay to come out so he can beat them up. Not a gay person he has a beef with. Any person he thinks is gay will do. Is that a hate crime? Again, pretty much a no brainer.

Moving on, a guy waits in the parking lot of a bar for a woman to come out so he can rape her. Not a woman he has a beef with, any woman will do. Is that a hate crime? Seems like a no brainer to me...but I don't think the majority of people ever think of it that way.

were addressed seperately, then the hate crime statute wouldn't have applied in the case of the Latino young man in question. If it's just about the rape when it's a woman why wouldn't it be just about the rape in this case?

The real issue is that most people don't see the need to include crimes against women as hate crimes. I'm not sure why. I figure it's either they don't want to give up the right to keep on hating women or they don't want to face the reality that some people actually do hate women. Maybe both depending on the person. I'm willing to consider other possibilities as well.

He shoved a hollow pole up the kid's ass and beat the shit out of him for FIVE HOURS, even pouring bleach down the pole and into the kid's insides once or twice, then left the poor kid outside overnight.

The boy was in the hospital for THREE MONTHS. I'd support the same sentence for anyone who did that sort of thing to a woman.
