15. Here's what a REAL (Greenwich Village) elitist looks like:
Bush Twin Kicks Neighbors to the Curb

"Among the perks of being a daughter of the President of the United States: round-the-clock free parking for your security detail. Residents of the Greenwich Village block where Barbara Bush has been living recently noticed a pair of new signs on the curb reading "FLEO." The signs, whose acronym stands for "Federal Law Enforcement Officer," appear to be there to carve out a space for the Secret Service S.U.V. that idles on the street whenever Bush is around.
After taking several days to look into the matter, a spokesman for the New York City Department of Transportation was unable to say who, if anyone, had requested the signs—which, needless to say, have inspired quite a few grumbles from other well-heeled residents on the perpetually parking-strapped block.

It's an open secret in the neighborhood that Barbara, who reportedly works at the Cooper-Hewitt Design Museum, lives on West 9th Street in a building owned by the daughter of Bush's longtime friend, Chelsea Piers developer Roland Betts. Jenna, Barbara's twin, is also frequently seen entering and leaving the building, although, according to the Washington Post, she has been working in Panama as an intern for Unicef since the end of the summer. (The White House typically doesn't comment on the twins' whereabouts and did not respond to a message from Radar.)"

2. Depends on how you define "elitist"
In some ways I am, in some not.

as teachers, my husband and I have worked 30 years to make ends meet. And who knew we were rich?

6. Ignoring context is always a good way to give guilt
Someone with $10K a year in NYC and therefore homeless is not necessarily better off than someone with $100 a year in São Paulo and therefore homeless. If anything, the Brasiliero might be better off because there's a community where people are supportive of one another (I think I'm remembering Chomsky's remarks correctly; I hope I'm not romanticizing instead).

Context matters. If you can't afford food, shelter, etc. then you're no wealthier than anyone else in a comparable situation no matter how different the absolute numbers involved.

7. very enlightening
It makes you think about some of the "unplanned spending" that people do. It definetly makes me think about what I spend money on. I tend to buy too much red bull, and other drinks at convience stores. Maybe I could find ways to cut back and help others too.....just a thought.

ps. I don't think giving to DU is not a good thing. I plan on doing so after I do my taxes next year. It's a good way to be able to talk about politics with other people.

8. I come down from my Ivory Tower in the morning
Edited on Sun Nov-19-06 09:03 AM by acmejack
after an organic vegetarian meal, hop into the Volvo, carefully avoiding the unwashed ignorant masses, grab a Starbucks Latte, pick up a NYT, and speed to my high paying job at the University where I teach Advanced Marxist Studies and Revolutionary Tactics. I generally practice some Yoga, pick up some French wine on the way home where I engage in perverted acts with my bisexual lover after using illicit substances. We usually cruise the web afterward, looking for websites that should be banned if the Government was doing it's job. I read a couple of passages from Mao's Little Red Book and then go to bed.

I'm normal. 695,000,000 richest!

13. A matter of perspective.
My parents are not elitist (retired, fixed income, struggle to pay insurance), but that joke of a website would claim they are.

I could give a thousand examples, and some of them are not particularly pleasant.

16. I'm in the same boat as your parents: retired, fixed income (ss), 50% for rent, etc.
I commented in another thread about people who are allegedly liberal, but who are either quite deeply thoughtless, or not liberal at all but rather rightwingers parodying the liberal stereotype with malice aforethough. I'd put the builders of this "you're wealthy" site into this category. Either they're wellmeaning but so stupid that they can't do better than "slogan liberalism" ...or they're rightwingers trying to de-legitimize caring. I'm not sure which I'd prefer it be.

17. I'm so damned elitist
I'm about to get off my 3 year old computer to hop into my 14 year old car to drive to the market and get some store brand cereal, cat litter, milk and frozen pies on sale two for one. But you know, I consider myself to be pretty damned lucky to have the funds to buy that stuff...
