WHEN the Democrats formally take control of the US Congress in the new year, Henry Waxman, House representative for a California district that includes Beverly Hills, West Hollywood, Malibu and Santa Monica, is one of the men US business will be watching closely.

--snip---
Waxman has already made some of his targets clear: executive salaries, the windfall profits of Big Oil, the high prices of pharmaceuticals and the generosity of government contracts, particularly in defence and especially involving Halliburton, the former company of Vice-president Dick Cheney.

--snip---

Democrats have long called for a roll-back of these tax breaks and with an estimated 83 per cent of oil and gas company political donations going to Republican candidates at the recent mid-term election, their position is likely to only get harder.

The same can be said of Halliburton. A recent report by the US inspector-general's office overseeing Iraq spending, found that $US163 million of the $US296 million in costs charged by Halliburton subsidiary KBR in a one-year period went to expenses such as back-office support, transport and security - a much higher percentage than charged by other companies in Iraq.

All up, the US has spent more than $US20 billion in trying to rehabilitate Iraq but critics such as Waxman say companies like Halliburton have wasted too much.

"Halliburton was given a blank cheque by the Bush administration, and the Republican Congress did nothing to stop the haemorrhaging of taxpayer dollars," Waxman said before the election.

It should be an interesting new year.

8. Waxman. will need a lot of people covering his back, and a strong
show of support could start with us. I, for one, plan to contact his office to voice support and wish him a swift resolution to this corporate corruption.

Not only is he taking on this administration, but the big boys, as well. He must have an iron will and the facts to back up his charges, because he's treading on dangerous ground and they won't mess around if he gets too close to the truth. Bless his heart for being so dogged.
