Air Force One is "broken" - - Bush shifting to smaller plane
Edited on Sun Nov-19-06 08:05 PM by Bluebear
(I would watch him, he's liable to catch Air Paraguay down to his new "ranch".)

HO CHI MINH CITY, Vietnam--- Air Force One has suffered a mechanical problem, forcing President Bush to shift to a smaller backup jet as he continues his Asian trip.

The White House isn't specifying the problem that grounded the Boeing 747 which usually serves as the presidential aircraft. It happened in Ho Chi Minh City in Vietnam before the president was to fly to Jakarta, Indonesia.

The glitch left officials scrambling to accommodate dozens of traveling staffers. Most were getting seats on a press charter aircraft.

The White House is hopeful the 747 will be repaired before the next leg -- from Jakarta to Hawaii. If it isn't, Bush's Boeing 757 may have to make refueling stops along the way.

hour visit. He won't be spending the night although they are "confident" of the security measures taken.

30. That 747 just doesn't "break down"
You're absolutely right. That 747 is probably the most recognizable plane in the world. I think you've got it exactly right.

The call sign follows the office holder, not the machine.

34. But it's all the obvious markings and paint job that the world sees...
A lesser known or unmarked plane would not be as noticable, no matter its official designation...THAT's the point...

And where the heck is AF-2?

After all there are systems in those two planes that do not exist on others...

Oh and how ironic, where it broke

20. I wouldn't be surprised if there is nothing wrong with that
plane. He was told to switch planes to avoid the crushing mobs at the airport. The sub plane will be incognito to avoid the demonstrators.

18. Why does the term
horse hockey come to mind. AF1 simply does not break and if it would there is a second aircraft of the same type to replace it. This is indeed a shell game because of the anticipated reaction to his arrival.

26. I can think of a more appropriate plane for THIS world leader
Considering that where he's going people don't like him very much, I'd go rent the most inconspicuous prop job I could find and fly him into Jakarta on that.

32. I know nothing about the airport situation in Jakarta, but switching to
a smaller plane would mean that he would have more options open for where they could land. Could be a way totally avoid the crush of the angry crowd by avoiding the main airport.

Turns out it was a flat tire. They flew a new one in, amd the 747 is completely whole now.
