Fox News prepping right-leaning satire
http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/hr/content_display/television/news/e3i61fccc799efa3cb7cc70027d80722adf

Fox News Channel might air two episodes of a "Daily Show"-like program with a decidedly nonliberal bent on Saturday nights in late January, with the possibility that it could become a weekly show for the channel.

The half-hour show is executive produced by "24's" Joel Surnow and Manny Cota and creator Ned Rice, who previously wrote for "Politically Incorrect" and "Late Late Show With Craig Ferguson" through This Just In Prods. It would take aim at what Surnow calls "the sacred cows of the left" that don't get made as much fun of by other comedy shows.

"It's a satirical news format that would play more to the Fox News audience than the Michael Moore channel," Surnow said. "It would tip more right as 'The Daily Show' tips left."

SNIP

Taped before a studio audience in Los Angeles, the show will feature two co-anchors, actors Kurt Long ("Cuts," "Games Across America") and Susan Yeagley ("Curb Your Enthusiasm," "Reno 911!"). It also will feature person-on-the-street interviews and correspondent reports like other shows. But Surnow said that it's not going to be strictly conservative but more in the spirit of the old and rebellious "Saturday Night Live."

100. Well, there's the rub, eh?
Colbert and Stewart are only left-leaning in that they're speaking truth to power, Right or Left, only the Republicans have had total control for 6 years, so both shows seem "Left-leaning." The humor in both shows is not that they're left-leaning or Bush-bashing, it's that they highlight the absurd, typically with the mocked's own words -- typically through earlier video clips.

Exactly how will the Right speak truth to power, when they represent the powerful?

that someone would take the time, actual LIFE ESSENCE wasting away, to DRAW this kind of Drivel..

I bet they're a regular riot at a party.. "Look at me! I have a Lampshade on my head! That means I'm having a good time, and the Life of the party!"

"No, that means you're a retarded dork who lives in Iconland, right next to ClicheVille.."

People like this guy should be found dead on the toilet with a copy of "Catcher in the Rye" stuffed down their throats -- by some crazy liberal of course.. funny how no one ever mentions that "crazy liberals" NEVER KILL PEOPLE, every notice that? Always a NUTTY Right Wing guy, that quiet guy next door, the scout leader who can't dance, etc, etc..

Thanks for the toons, I always find them particularly galling, sorry :)

81. You nailed it.
There is a difference in sensibilities. It seems that leftwing people are less apt to listen to talk radio all day. But we do tend to watch The Daily Show or Colbert. My sister-in-law and her husband are very educated people who don't like TDS or Colbert. But they did find a woman who showed up at their Halloween party, and this was this year, mind you, wearing a blue dress with a "semen" stain...hilarious. Her date was "Bill Clinton". Yes. Practically a decade later, that's still the funniest joke. Rightwingers just can't get enough of blowjob jokes. So, like you, I'm skeptical about the success of right leaning satire.

19. Next they'll do a right wing version of the Colbert Report
where they have somebody pretend to be a left-wing pundit with a TV show.

In the same way that Colbert is a parody of right-wing personalities with their own shows like O'Reilly, Hannity, Glenn Beck, Brit Hume, Wolf Blitzer, etc., FOX's show would be a parody of....um....er...that one guy on that channel, you know....and don't forget um....this other guy I think I saw once. The Liberal Media Elite won't know what to do!

As for doing a left-wing Colbert-type satire, methinks you imply these individuals far too much creativity and credit. That would be far too subtle for their ilk. That's like expecting a Tiffany egg to come out of a duck's butt.

66. A lack of creativity
It is always difficult to be creative when you are defending the status quo. The great works of art and literature were often published in spite of the existing governments and religious oligarchies rather from the support of them.

Specifically, I feel that many conservatives have a literal approach to life. Look at their interpretations of the Bible and the Constitution. There is often a lack of appreciation of symbolism, irony, or satire among my conservative peers at work.

For example, many of them hate Jon Stewart, but watch the Colbert Report. I think they take him seriously. The link to his show was also on former Representative Delay's website.

Battle Star Galactica is popular among conservatives, but many of them didn't get the obvious message in the episodes on using suicide bombers, forcing religion on others, fair trials, arresting people without charging them, and torturing prisoners. They claim that the evil cylons have these policies, but yet they support the same real ones that are in effect.

The closest thing I see to a conservative comedy show on TV besides Fox News is the Blur Collar Comedy and that is just redneck jokes, slapstick, and jokes about bodily functions.

We'll see, it may be so bad that it is good.

75. Well, I'm sure BSG isn't as popular with them now as before given the turn the story has taken.
Edited on Mon Nov-20-06 01:58 AM by FVZA_Colonel
Perhaps I haven't paid as much attention to it as they have, but I never saw any sort of tilt to the extreme that people like Jonah Goldberg (who, I believe, has written about the show in National Review).

69. This will fail for the same reason Air America/liberal talk radio did/will:
Conservatives are drawn to talk radio. Why? Who knows...it's one of those realities. Thinking you can just do change the "tilt" and create a success is naive.

Same with comedy. Comedy is anti-authority and tends to be more liberal.

It won't work.

Considering how offensive it will have to be to make this work, they just might have to boycott this show.

79. I think you all are being had....
Take a look at the source of this "news". Hollywood Reporter thrives on baiting people into believing wildly false claims. And "Fox News" is to air this show? Even that stretches the imagination -- how would they then be perceived as "fair and balanced" by the Faux minions? I know, this argument doesn't make any sense to me either, but I have no faith in "hollywoodreporter" as a legitimate source.
