State of DU
Prior to the election many of us were angry, bitter, defeated, disillusioned and just downright sick. We expected to face another stolen election. I believe we were preparing our minds for the lack of public outrage at such. It has taken a while for the victory to really soak in to most of us. Despite our win, many of us have remained a bit apprehensive. Skinner had a post in which he mentioned one of the reasons he couldn't be extremely excited about the win. The nearly 3,000 of our soldiers killed there.

My opinion is we will have alot of apprehension until we have a Democratic President in the White House. Only then can we rest assured things will start beginning to normal. We have alot to overcome. I believe most of us has said it is going to take a century to undo what has been done by the people who have been in power.

The nice thing about democracy is the ability to debate, but until we reach victory in 08, lets try to pull together more here on this board.

I am not sure where all the animosity is originating from but lets all step back a step or two, take a deep breath and quit bashing each other.

We have a common goal here and most of us are working on issues of a common ground. So, I suggest we set aside our differences and work together.

1. I agree with your assessment
Like Skinner, I could not totally celebrate "victory" knowing what it has cost until the American people finally pulled their heads out of their asses........it has all been just too much and it did not stop on November 7th.

2. Maybe it is like sports, and the OSU-Michigan game
The fans on both sides love the game, they just think their team is the best and when things are not going their way they get upset and question the coaching/recruiting efforts.

Even when someone wins, that means someone you like could have lost - like in the primaries, or on an issue, etc.

We want our 'team', or personal favorite, to win all the time. That only happens if you are an OSU fan btw :)

Just listen to call in shows after a game. People may praise or complain about the people on their team having done well or not enough.

Tis human nature :)

4. Can you be more specific?
Not peeing on your feel-good parade. I would just like to understand what you have in mind when you say "So, I suggest we set aside our differences and work together."

What differences would you have us all set aside, and what "common goal" would you have us work toward -- other than turning over Congress, which we just did?

12. Right. The people who don't give up anything
are usually the ones telling others to give up goals "for the common good." That's why equal rights keeps getting pushed farther down the list of priorities. That's why Dems are giving ground in the choice war, letting Roe v Wade get chipped away. That's why corporations keep gaining power and anyone who protests those corporations is considered a terrorist.

If too much gets sacrificed to find that common ground we'll find we've sacrificed everything we need to be fighting for.

6. So nothing has changed on DU. That suggests to me that the problem may lie....
... with your *expectations*.

7. I started coming to DU because,
to my amazement, I found other people that shared my views (that was in September of 2001).

Since the election I thought, once again, that I was alone in my thoughts. Yet, once again, I found kindred spirits here.

Since 2004 I focused on the mid-term elections. I put everything I could into them. On the "big day" I took the day off of work and was a poll worker. I was pleased with the results. I felt hollow.

Each day since I have read of the unimaginable horrors that are happening in Iraq. I felt sick. I felt ashamed. I still feel sick and ashamed.

I wasn't expecting such post-election depression. I guess in my feeble mind I hadn't really considered the fact that a win at the polls did not equate to going back in time before the invasion. Not everything was solved. Nothing was solved.

I am pleased at the election results but I am unhappy. I truly ache for our troops, for the Iraqi people and the dark path for which we seem to be on.

I can't imagine what my mental state would be like if it was not for here. Frankly, my friends and family do not understand.

Thank you for this post!!

9. Great post, but I don't go blindly anywhere... Until I hear what differences
there are to be set aside, until I can judge for myself whether the common ground issues are truly the important issues-not just about getting elected-then maybe we have a deal. :toast:

10. The differences I refer to
Edited on Mon Nov-20-06 09:48 AM by NoBushSpokenHere
are the petty complaints we often receive over items such as:

1. Typos (we have worked hard and are continuing to work hard - a typo here and there should not result in a lynch mob) Typos occur when tired - gimme a break!
2. Grammatical errors being flamed (not all DUers are college educated) Deal with it. Better yet, work on educational issues (there are plenty educational items that need addressed)
3. Flame wars that continue after an apology is made (If someone has innocently posted something not politically correct)

Let's quit wasting time in argument over issues that do not contribute to the general good of our cause. Let's work on issues that can bring about change in this nation!

13. Ah. I think many of us thought you were talking about important stuff.
Like the fight over whether to support equal rights for GLBT people or to support bigotry.
Like the fight over whether to defending Roe v Wade or let is slip away, one new restriction at a time.
Like the fight over whether to limit corporate power or to keep supporting pro-corporate puppet candidates.
Like the fight over whether to pass and enforce environmental regulations despite the impact on corporate profits, or to rely on voluntary standards and wishful thinking that won't hurt anyone's bottom line.

Those are some of the issues that prevent us from unifying.

You are attempting to limit my god given right to be a pompous, arrogant, bitter, mean, nasty, cruel, sarcastic, contemptuous asshole.

What gives you the fucking right?

The DU community could improve on it's obvious inferiority to me, NNadir, by conceding right up front that I am always right, and I always know what is best for the world, the country and for me, NNadir. The candidates and policies I support are the right ones, because they are proposed by me, NNadir. It's my way or the highway, Bub.

;-)
