Poll question: Draft: Uppadown?
Charlie Rangel is calling for a resumption of the draft. What's your uppadown* vote.

2. Debating the war is purely academic....
...for those with nothing at stake. This has been my big problem both with people who support the war but don't want to fight it and with people who don't support the war but are willing to "compromise" on it in favor of other issues that I, frankly, consider less pressing.

Example: I won't support a Democrat who supports the war. Some people think that makes me a moral purist. I think it just means that I have standards. This isn't an academic discussion for me. I'm in the military. The death and killling are real.

I see people here objecting to the draft way more strongly than they object to the war. That saddens me.

4. Nay
I vote "Other". I understand the logic about war, but I just can't favor the draft. I served in the Army when there was a draft. I just can't favor it.

I lost my best friend in Vietnam, and I still don't know why.

But I'm proud as hell of my dad who fought in WWII.

I would have enlisted for WWII. I would not have for Vietnam but for the draft. I was lucky and didn't go to Nam.

I respect all who serve.

6. Why should we have conscription
for Bush depleting our army? To me this seems a little like kissing GW's ass for pissing all over us.

7. My vote is to get out of Iraq & use our volunteer force as it was meant
To defend our country, not becoming targets in a war of choice based on a lie.

11. Hell no.
And it scares me that about 36 percent here voted yes. I am a draft age 20 year old male. I have been against the war since it began. Why must I be drafted and go to Iraq? How does that solve anything? How about instead of drafting kids like me, lets draft the Senators and Congress people who voted for this war. I don't see why the support for the draft here is so high. Remember, people my age are much more likely to be against the war, so why must we be punished for the mistakes of the baby boomer politicians?

12. Down.
On a separate matter, my personal poll:

Good grammar as part of valuing higher levels of literacy: UP.

Bad grammar, glorifying lower levels of literacy: DOWN.

13. I hope just talking about starting up the draft will give college age
republicans some reasons to think about why they support Bush, the GOP, and this god awful war.
