Lost in the "draft" cacophony...Iraq to become MORE like Viet Nam, not less.
And we, the democrats, will take the fall. I posted the following paragraph in another thread, as part of the draft debate, but no one seems to be addressing it, focusing only on the draft angle. We're getting screwed folks...

---

I fear the way we're being set up, as a party, to take the fall for Bush's Viet Nam-style escalation of the war even after the people sent a very clear signal that we're done with it. So, are the democrats sitting down and talking about exit strategies now? No? No. All the talk is now about ESCALATION and EXPANSION. Total sixties flash-back. We're being told that all we need to do is send in MORE troops and commit to a LONGER stay, and then we can leave.

---

We need to fighting THIS madness, so that Rangel's proposal becomes moot.

1. Never enable the war enablers.

Nothing good can come from a draft. Nothing. Pulling out now is the only solution, not a draft.

2. Exactly. But what about the ESCALATION?
But what about the ESCALATION? There are a hundred threads on the DRAFT. But if we stop wringing our hands about Rangel and direct this effort to reinforcing what the nation just called upon the government to do -- GET OUT -- then Rangel's draft proposal becomes moot anyway!

8. About escalation
The Neo Cons think that because the people there don't like us, that more soldiers will make them like us. That is far from the truth. The more soldiers we put there, the more of an occupiant we will be. This will not end until we pull. We can not win the war with 150,000 troops, 250,000 troops or even a million. There is no winning a war when we aren't even wanted there. We have to pull out.

5. His numbers?
Since when has he cared about his numbers? Unless they're on a Halliburton spreadsheet.

6. Agree, sending in more troops is idiotic. Once you get more troops
Edited on Mon Nov-20-06 11:35 AM by Jon8503
in there, that is what you have "more troops" to die, for what. Also, what is that to gain, sending in more troops? You still have the same debacle of a war that never should have been.

The media and republicans say you can't just pull out because you will have chaos. They say how will we be seen. We are seen now as occupying a country and we are seen in a negative state for starting this war. We are hated around the world now for this war. Everyone knows now, it was a horrible mistake.

You have chaos whether you pull out or you stay. Whose fault is that? Nothing can be done about it now. It keeps getting worse day by day and I fear for our troops in the situation they are in.

It needs to stop now and no more troops should be sent.

7. I cannot understand how 20,000 troops...
...will suddenly fix the war we have been fighting with only 100,000 troops when we ACTUALLY need 300,000-450,000 troops.

20,000 troops will only provide a bigger target or help secure ONE major location, like Baghdad. (see also: American embassy in Viet Nam).

This will not do a damned thing to help this war out, but it is a great way to buy another six months of waiting from the American people if they can be convinced that these 20,000 troops are effective.

The only option is withdrawal. Preferably yesterday.

The country has gone to hell and it will only stabilize when occupying forces have left and the dust settles. We screwed up and set into motion forces that we cannot control. Pandora's box. Hope lies in the Iraqis settling things for themselves, not the American occupation doing it for them.
