The only way the Republicans will ever get some of their boys on currency

U.S. mint pushes new $1 coin

Hopes that images of past presidents will entice consumers to break their reluctance to dollar coins; Nixon coin slated for 2016.

WASHINGTON (Reuters) -- The U.S. Mint is hoping that Martin Van Buren and Millard Fillmore can do what Susan B. Anthony and Sacagawea couldn't - get Americans to use dollar coins.

The Mint on Monday revealed the design of the new U.S. $1 coin, which will be issued in a series that will eventually include the faces of each U.S. president.

It will release four new presidential dollars each year, starting with George Washington, John Adams, Thomas Jefferson and James Madison in 2007. The Van Buren dollar will be released in 2008 and the Fillmore in 2010.

Richard M. Nixon, who resigned in disgrace in 1974 in the wake of the Watergate scandal, will appear on the coin in 2016.

2. Van Buren and Fillmore?
I can't believe they made the cut over Polk and Garfield! that's a shame.

3. Oh, man... Can hardly wait until we get the Polk dollar
My life will be complete then.

Okay, seriously... Yes, this will be an interesting thing to collect, and I will collect them, but putting a bunch of old men that probably most of the country couldn't tell you who they are even after you've given them their names (Washington, Jefferson, Lincoln and a few others being the exception) is not going to make people go ga-ga over using these coins as currency. Plus, the look of the coin will keep changing with each new portrait, which will cause conniptions amongst the less savvy cashiers out there (I get suspicious looks from them on the rare occassions I try to buy something with a 2-dollar bill).

4. You really want Americans to use dollar coins?
STOP PRINTING DOLLAR BILLS. Duh.

Coins for dollars can work, but people aren't going to make the switch unless forced.

6. Can the obverse of the Coolidge be
his mistress? I'd switch immediately.

For my money, I really like dollar coins. Rupee coins are so convenient for the little things in India, comparable to dollars. I initially liked the Euro, too, but got over that real quick when I had to keep counting to 8 on my way to getting drunk. :)

8. Guess The Nixon Stamp Idea Was A No-Go
research showed too many people would spit on the wrong side

Now while I'd never have a booosh coin in my pocket, my hopes are I'll have one of his personally stamped license plates (or one made by one of his "buddies") on my car in the near future.

9. This is a Winger's Fantasy Come True
Since every president who's been dead for two years will be on a coin, Ronald Reagan's worthless face will finally grace US currency.

Unfortunately, they're going to do it in chronological order instead of order of honesty, so Warren G. Harding will be on a coin before Jimmy Carter.

11. Coins don't wear out like paper,
and saves the mint a bundle of money.
Also, you can't deface or tear them. We really like them. Not that that matters to you. LOL
