Pelosi... draft will not be on the list.

Draft is NOT in our agenda! Case close and lets now focus of other important issue!

Pelosi said restoring the draft will not be on that list and was not something she supported.

"The speaker and I discussed scheduling and it did not include that," Hoyer added.

Incoming Ways and Means Committee Chairman Charlie Rangel, D-N.Y., caused a stir by repeating a long-held position that a draft is the best way to ensure that all levels of society are represented in the military. Besides Rangel, there is almost no support in Congress for restoring the draft.

"It's not about a draft, it's about shared sacrifice in this country," Pelosi said. She said Rangel is "a strong voice for social justice in our country" and his support for the draft was "a way to make a point."

6. You mean the Speaker of the House...
has something better to do than expose the Republican chickenhawks as hypocrites at the expense of Americans?

Good.

8. She handled this wonderfully. Explaining our party's intentions
and supporting Rangle at the same time. She was good with the Kerry misquote also. Other Dem's really need to follow her lead on handling the media spin on Democrat issues and comments.

10. Note
It is a win for Charlie Rangel to bring the subject up.
It is a win for Nancy Pelosi to table it.

Why do you think I say this?

14. Draft
I am glad it is not going to be on the table. You know what would be broadcast over the mainstream media - Democrats want to bring back the draft - they wouldn't explain it's to make a point.

Also, if it ever really did pass, do you really want to trust Bush with that many troops - if the draft was reinstated? He could blame the draft on the democrats and then use the soldiers to attack Iran or some other crazy thing. At least with the limited number of soldiers he has to work with, he is stopped from invading other countries.

16. she and rangel have successfully cornered the repubs on this
If the repubs come out and say a draft is a bad idea, they are agreeing with Pelosi on an issue right out of the box and they are saying to their heartland constituency: you sacrifice so everyone else doesn't have to. If they attack Pelosi and say Rangel's idea has merit, they push on a very unpopular issue.

Its really quite brilliant when and if you take the time to stop and think about it.

19. pelosi's reference to "shared sacrifice" is telling.
sacrifice is voluntary. bush cooks up a war and "we" all have to "sacrifice" equally for it? i don't think so. sure, chickenhawks are hypocrites, but that doesn't mean i have to "sacrifice" for a cause i don't believe in. i'll pass on my "share" of that.
