Do you agree with Rep. Charles Rangel that bringing back the draft would deter politicians from launching wars?

1. How can it be freeped? It certainly can't be DU'ed
We don't agree on an answer over here... do you think the Freepers agree on this either?

3. Sorry-I don't know quite what to think yet
Initially I thought it was disastrous politically and bad in general.
But after reading his arguments, about how only the poor are paying the price for this war right now, well...that did resonate strongly with me.

But, I am just worried about the backlash and so on....

I am worried that the GOPigs will find a way to milk this for 2008 and nothing will be accomplished in the way of getting some security that they would stop starting unconscionable and bloody wars.

And if they did bring back the draft, I am sure the kids of connected GOP leaders at the very least, would still be able to dodge em :eyes:.

4. I don't know, man
I don't see how that poll can be "freeped." The question is "do you agree with Rangel" which most freeptards would immediately just answer "no" but the subject is certainly deeper than that. I haven't made my own mind up. Besides, no one gives a shit about CNN polls anyway.

5. You think that a draft would deter future wars?
If so, it never has before, why do you think it will now?

Face it, the scions of the powerful don't go unless they want to, and a draft won't effect that.

6. It didn't with Nam
I cannot tell you how many young men I knew who had money and connections, who were able to BUY deferrments, as in the quaterback of the football team, whose Dad was an Attorney and Mom was an MD, who was deferred because of a "bad heart condition".

Hey, Mr. Rangle, this one instance was in NYC. What rock are you living under?

7. What wars have we had since Vietnam?
I don't think it's causal, but we really haven't had a war since the last draft.

13. We haven't had an official war since WWII, but we've had dozens of
military operations in foreign countries in virtually every part of the globe. We are in the mess we are today because of those unofficial wars. Just a FYI

9. Like others here, I haven't made up my mind about this either.
While I certainly understand what Rangel is trying to say, I think it would be Bush's wet dream to have a draft that he didn't have to initiate. My nephew, a Marine, was in the Gulf War and has been in the war in Iraq, and even he is considering volunteering next year to go back for the money they are offering, not to mention you don't pay taxes for the time you are over there. He only has 2 years to go before retirement, and I am doing everything I can possibly do to keep him from going back. The only good thing is he could volunteer to go to Quwait where he was before and it's relatively safe, but still......I don't want him anywhere near the Middle East for the next 2 yrs. I'm going to hold off voting in this poll because I think if we give Bush more troops he'll most certainly invade Iran.
