Boy, That Abraham Lincoln Sure is Inexperienced |
|
My fellow liberals, the republic is in peril! And yet, at this moment of peril comes the possibility of greatest joy! With the Democrats thoroughly divided and the Know-Nothings and Whigs completely shattered, our new Republican Party stands to win the next election.
May I put in a word against the current front-runner, Mr. Lincoln.
What, I ask, has Mr. Lincoln ever done?
One term in the U.S. House of Representatives twenty years ago does not a great man make.
We know he is eloquent. He debates well. But I want a man of substance, someone who has accomplished something.
We need a man like William Seward or Salmon Chase! Someone with years of government experience under their belt. Should we win the next election, the union may well fall apart. We may have a Civil War and how can we trust someone like Mr. Lincoln to deal with that threat? No, we need a man of talent, with a long record of accomplishment.
Mr. Lincoln, for that matter, is a "flip-flopper," who says one thing to one audience and another to another.
Oh, and his religious rhetoric really turns me off!

5. The riots were about the $300 buy-out. |
|
Tammany Hall had worked to make many Irish immigrants become citizens - and voters. Then those new immigrants 'discovered' they might have to fight for their new country against Johnny Reb. The riots were almost totally by those Irish-Americans citizens who were angered by the idea that the rich could buy their way out of serving but the poor were sent to fight. (Very few people were actually drafted, as it turned out.)
Isn't it nice our Draft doesn't have the $300 buy-out?
Lincoln ... author of the 'Enrollment Act of Conscription' and the 'Emancipation Proclamation' both. Ironic. For the draft and against slavery. Funny how some dolts think it's the same, isn't it?
