OK, so Nancy Pelosi wanted Murtha, and Murtha lost...why is that such a terrible thing, all i hear is how shes such a big loser now and that shes lost all her power because she picked the wrong guy...Is this horse racing where if your guy doesn't place you go broke? Last I checked they were both democrats. Its driving me nuts.

1. You didn't miss a thing; the media whores are making a much
bigger deal of it than it deserves. Anything to tar the Dems negatively makes them happy.

3. After years of GOP groupthink in Congress, ...
the news media cannot adapt to the sight of real, actual politics in Congress. Of course, the self interest of their owners is that the media not recognize that this is how politics should work, because their (media business, not news) interests were better served by the GOP groupthink.

5. It's due to widespread magical thinking
You see, if you back a 'loser', some of their 'loserness' will rub off on you. The converse is precisely why politicians are so quick to have photo ops with people like Lance Armstrong -- they think some of his 'winnerness' will rub off on them. It's a basic principle of Sympathetic Magick (and while I'm at it, I'd suggest that the principles behind most marketing techniques are precisely the same...).

Sure, it's primitive -- but at least we don't pee on trees to mark our territory anymore (at least most of us don't...).

6. Actually, you did miss something.
The power of the Majority Leader is always being scrutinized and assessed by the press and pundits, and this is not anything new. DUers either don't know much about the history of House politics, are they're in denial. Backing Murtha and having him resoundingly defeated is certainly not a death knell to Pelosi's leadership, but it is noteworthy.
