Did anyone else see this? re: submarine collision
about an hour ago, there was a "breaking news" banner on MSNBC.COM that said "Submarine collides with japanese civilian vessel - developing".

Then about 15 minutes later, it was gone, and now I can't find any reference to it anywhere. It was attributed to Kyodo news, but I can't find anything there, either.

Anybody else see this? I wonder what's going on.

3. ah
thank you both.

It was weird how it went from breaking headline banner to buried.

Thanks - I was concerned it was much worse than it was.

7. The English version corresponds well to the Japanese version
of the article:

http://dailynews.yahoo.co.jp/fc/domestic/shipwreck/

Interesting that they use the word "shipwreck" in the URL since it was just a little brushing.

4. MoneyFunk,
You reminded me of the time when I couldn’t fall asleep so I turned on the TV,it was about 3:30am, during the time when Israel was attacking Hezbollah in Lebanon.

It was reported on FOX that Israel bombed Iran’s nuclear sites. I remember thinking, that was great news because Bush couldn’t say Iran was a threat to us anymore.

I know I wasn’t dreaming, I was sitting at my computer. The next day I found no news on it.

6. I've come across some strange headlines myself during breaking...
...news events. September the 11th is the most-memorable, mostly because everyone (including myself) was shitting bricks on every news report as things got worse. It is amazing, though, how quickly a story can be buried, though.

Information is power. Control of information is a very powerful thing.

5. Good money says there was a V.I.P. on board. This happened...
...with the USS Greenville. "Surfacing Exercises" is usually a euphemism for an emergency surfacing:

From what I've heard this is a pretty rough ride and it's not done very much because crew members can be hurt, sometimes seriously, when it's done. However, when V.I.P.s are one board, there's often the temptation to "show off the capabilities of the hardware", since the V.I.P.s usually are government officials who would have some say in the financing of such an expensive machine.

I'm not a sub guy. I only remember what I read about the Greenville (sp?) (which had V.I.P.s on board) on different submariner web forums after they struck the Japanese fishing vessel. At least a dozen Japanese were killed, btw. All...to show off.

Otherwise, there's no god damned good reason why a multi-billion-dollar piece of high-tech naval equipment wouldn't be able to detect a lowly fishing boat before surfacing.

8. Those were ENRON "big shots" on board
They hit The Ehimi Maru, and killed a bunch of students. I posted the transcripts of the
investigation" here when I ran across them online.. They all sounded "surprisingly similar"..

9. WERE those Enron guys? I always wondered who the 'wigs were.
Thanks for the info. Disturbing, of course, but "disturbing" is the currency of our time.

10. If I can get to my old bookmarks, I'll repost the transcripts..
On one of them, the person lets it slip that the "police" let them all go home, and they met together BEFORE they were questioned the next day..

There was always speculation that a civilian was "at the wheel"..

11. It doesn't matter if a corporate bigwig was at the wheel or not. The skipper of the boat
bears the responsibility for what happened.

It just looks worse for all if the bigwigs were allowed to showboat at the controls when they hit the fishing boat though.
