"Peace Love The Gap": Everything that's wrong with this country in 30 seconds
Now maybe it's the Xmastime gigantic gold peace sign dance floor prop or the commercialization of rap in a Gap ad, a bunch of kids hip hoppin around to a rhyme about We Gonna Take It To The World Peace Love The Gap, but what's really sick is they make the rapper serve a line about The Hood while he-- and all the dancers skippin around on the peace sign-- are wearin' hoodies.

It's an ad for hoodies. In the Hood. Get it?

Must be time for the next Next Big Thing to get Sold Out-- what's next?

4. That commercial makes me ill.
I've never been a big fan of Rap, but it's nothing if not genuine. Corporate America keeps trying to subdue it by making it over-the-top commercial. That commercial is laughable.

5. question
Doesn't Gap use cheap sweatshop-type labor to manufacture their clothing in Indonesia or something?

Peace, love....uh huh. I'm surprised he isn't dancing on a dollar sign.

Gap commercials, dishwashers and cute ringtones are everything wrong with America.

14. Yes I gagged when I saw it - particularly the new "gang" symbol for Gap at the end:
Pretty much Scissors from Paper, Rock, Scissors with motion: Index and middle finger together and then open them up...revealing a "gap".

Sheesh...I propose a moratorium on commercials this year.

18. Another ad that tells you why this country is messed up:
The "Seven Days in a Sentra" campaign. Yes, because living out of your car is FUN. Dude, there are people all over this country living out of their cars but it's not because they're freewheeling happy Gen-Z types, it's because their jobs don't pay them enough to cover rent where they live, even if it's somewhere shitty. So, yeah, let's do a whole campaign aroudn the idea that living in your car is just one big post-college adventure.

Sigh.

It's only gonna get worse from here, folks, Christmas season starts for real this Friday,

The Plaid Adder

The last thing I bought at a Gap was a denim shirt with a "Made in Canada" label. Gap can go right to hell.

32. A (serious) war on (commercial) Christmas--would DUers be interested?
Bill O'Leilly jokes aside, I wonder if DU shouldn't consider activist action against certain retailers and their commercials during the holiday season. This thread about the Gap got me thinking.

Many of us were raised with Christmas as a religious holiday. Even for those of us who no longer practice our faith at an organized church, Christmas stands for ideals and hope for the human world. The holiday season also represents family (and all its ideals and flaws), caring for others, and bringing up what is best in ourselves.

It burns me that retailers take these ideals and try to translate them into billions of dollars to line their own pockets. This Gap commercial is a good example, but there are so many others.

When the right wing Christofascists decide they don't like something on TV, in the paper, etc., they send thousands of emails, letters, and make phone calls. I wonder if we shouldn't try this ourselves. We could start by sending emails to the Gap objecting to their bastardizing of the peace symbol for their own profit at a time when our nation is embroiled in an unnecessary and deceptive war started by a morally bankrupt administration. This page

http://www.gap.com/customerService/info.do?cid=7843&mlink=5058,644743,7&clink=644743

gives contact information. I am not sure which one to choose, so I may just call.

Boycotting is also a possibility. I have already decided based on their commercial that I will NOT shop at the Gap this Christmas. Nor will I shop at their affiliated stores:

Gap Inc. Brands: piperlime.com bananarepublic.com oldnavy.com forthandtowne.com gapcanada.com

Maybe we really COULD have a war on Christmas--the overbloated, commercialized nonsense that creates credit card debt and junk media.

Just a thought,

Nikki

36. I wonder if we made it its own post?
Maybe provided a template. Like this:

Dear Sir or Madam:

I have recently viewed your Christmas ad about _____. I am appalled at the crass commercialization/insensitivity/___ of the ad in its portrayal of ________.

Christmas is a time of year when we think about the human family and peace on earth. It is a true time for caring about others all over the world. ( This Christmas, the nation as a whole is reexamining its role in the world and its involvement in a war that was neither necessary nor honest. )

Your ad basardizes Christmas ideals in order to sell products.
