EGG HARBOR TOWNSHIP “We have had the emergency pantry for 12 years. The number of people we are seeing coming in is staggering,” said Evelyn Benton, director of the Community FoodBank of New Jersey, Southern Branch. “If you look at the figures for the month of October, we had 349 families in 2005 and 937 for this October.”
Benton said this year's food donations are down 11 percent, or 100,000 pounds, compared to last year. She emphasized that the food bank will struggle to provide for the needy, but will serve everyone.
The Ocean County Sheriff's Department organizes an annual Food and Toy Drive. This year, officials have seen an increase in requests from the previous year. On Nov. 9, the department had 150 requests for food. By Monday afternoon, there were about 300, said Mary McHugh, administrative assistant at the department.
Flipping through a stack of state forms that people fill out to get help, Benton saw a theme at her Egg Harbor Township-based food bank. Unemployment rates may be down, but working poor now make up the highest number of people in need. Disabled residents made up the majority last year.
