I don't get it. The only people I know anymore that I'd call really "hippies" are the ravers, and the ravers I know aren't exactly into any sociopolitical or economic theory of any sort. They're too busy cuddling.

I can't believe that in 2006, someone is honestly frightened of the resurgence of a movement whose auspicious beginnings were born from the want of peace. A movement, that in its core, was as a result of the Vietnam War - a war, much like the Iraqi War, that needn't have been fought, killed far too many for no just reason and besmirched the lessons of the Prince of Peace.

The Iraqi War's failures are not as the result of a few hippies - it is the failure of a few suits who placed oil, territory and military contracts above the good will of the American public - who didn't support the war even before it began (Google the polls in January 2003, if you don't believe me) - and who, by as much as 80 percent, believe we now should find a way out.

The hippies, who follow the concept our forefathers envisioned and question the consciousness, the authority and the actions of our government, would have been just up Jesus's alley. In fact, He would have welcomed and encouraged the discontent.

Jesus was constantly at odds with authority, both religious (the Pharisees) and political (the Romans). The theological Jesus may have died for your sins and mine, but the historical one died, like Fred Hampton, for the sin of being a threat to those in power.

Jesus rejected mainstream society outright. He shunned the squares, whom he called "hypocrites"; he preferred to hang with the whores and outcasts, the ad hoc community of freaks who followed him from town to town. He would have hung with the hippies of the 60s and he would have shunned your support for the killing of innocents to win, well... I forget, what do we win?

People like you would sooner kick Jesus in the ass than listen to His word of peace.

Jenean, America will never win another war as long as we continue to fight wars that are not for the common good. The current conflict in Iraq has helped no one but the right-wing corporate elite in their never-ending goal to pad their silk-lined pockets: it hasn't helped the 12-year-old Muslim boy with an Uzi and it hasn't helped the soldier from Kentucky or Tennessee or California or Idaho.

And we'll never rid the country of the hippies, because, as long as there is war, there will be people who beg for peace.
