Apparently, all that has to happen in today's world of con-servatives-are-always-correct is for the wackiest nutjobs from the "religious" Right to announce a two-day boycott of WalMart and suddenly the media sticks it right up there in the headlines to help them spread their word.
Last night I posted an emailing alert from the American "Family" Association calling on more of their "members" to join in an emergency boycott of WalMart on Black Friday/Saturday. Sure enough, less than 24 hours later, the networks and major news organizations are slapping their tale right into the media, starting with this Associated Press article.
It's funny how the American Family Association, whose boycotts have failed in nearly EVERY attempt over the last 20 years, can so easily get onto the front burner of "breaking" news. Obviously the media increasingly caters to the religious Right - an example of this is that one major gay organization just released our own list of holiday shopping stores - in a press release yesterday - but you ain't gonna see that appearing on the headlines of ABC News. The networks constantly help these christo-fascist organizations recruit new members, never cite any examples of failed campaigns (which are almost ALL of them) and never investigate the history of the religious beliefs these groups claim nor their organizations. Now why is that?
Anyway, here is the link to the ABC NEWS version that just came out:
By DAVID CRARY AP National Writer
NEW YORK Nov 21, 2006 (AP)— Long under fire from the left, Wal-Mart is now a target of Christian conservatives urging shoppers to boycott the huge retailer's post-Thanksgiving sales because of its low-key outreach to some gay-rights organizations.
One group, the American Family Association, is asking supporters to stay away from Wal-Mart on Friday and Saturday two of the busiest shopping days of the year. Another group, Operation Save America, plans prayer-and-preaching rallies outside many Wal-Mart stores on Friday.
The corporate actions that triggered the protests were little different from those taken by scores of major companies in recent years Wal-Mart paid $25,000 this summer to become a member of the National Gay and Lesbian Chamber of Commerce and donated $60,000 to Out and Equal, which promotes gay-rights advances in the workplace.
Conservative leaders viewed these actions as a betrayal of Wal-Mart's traditions, which have included efforts to weed out magazines with racy covers and CDs with explicit lyrics.http://abcnews.go.com/US/wireStory?id=2671068Notice how the MSM continues to characterize far right self-defined "religious" groups as "conservative" without any sort of verification or substantiation of that claim. And notice how easily something as simple as a wacko-organization with little history of boycott success can gain national attention just because they are "conservative" and "christian."
