10. And this from Wonkette:
www.wonkette.com

The Hill reports:

The incoming Democratic leadership team is already trying to snuff out a vestige of GOP rule: the practice of smoking in the Speaker’s Lobby.

Already with the moralizing and fun-hating. Dammit, Democrats, can’t you give the nation a break to hope for things to improve before you start reminding everyone why they haven’t voted for you in twenty years? Christ, we need a cigarette.

It's as if the world ends at the American borders to some of you people.

Regular exposure to second-hand smoke increases the chances of contracting lung disease by 25% and heart disease by 10%. - Health Canada
http://www.hc-sc.gc.ca/hl-vs/tobac-tabac/second/fact-fait/index_e.html

Exposure to other people's cigarette smoke (second-hand smoke, passive smoking, environmental tobacco smoke) can: increase the risk of contracting smoking related diseases such as cancer and heart disease; place extra stress on the heart and affect the body's ability to take in and use oxygen; trigger asthma attacks; increase the chances of sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS); and harm children and babies even more than adults. - UK Department of Health
http://www.dh.gov.uk/PublicationsAndStatistics/Publications/AnnualReports/AnnualReportsBrowsableDocument/fs/en?CONTENT_ID=4094860&MULTIPAGE_ID=4873781&chk=dOaScU

There is clear scientific evidence of an increased risk of lung cancer in non-smokers exposed to SHS. This increased risk is estimated at 20% in women and 30% in men who live with a smoker (2). Similarly, it has been shown that non-smokers exposed to SHS in the workplace have a 16 to 19% increased risk of developing lung cancer (3). The risk of presenting lung cancer increases with the degree of exposure. - World Health Organization

60. "It's as if the world ends at the American borders to some of you people"
...ah, dripping condescension as a debate tactic. I've seen it before from others who hail from the Great White North when they find something they feel especially superior about to their southern cousins - which is just about everything, from what I can tell.

Tell me: how does it feel to live in that perfectest, error-free, all-problems-solved, absolutely utopian paradise that is the country with the leaf on its flag? Is it just the specialist thing ever?

31. That's a rather stupid comment.
I'm guessing you're a lifelong nonsmoker, eh? They being generally the only people who say such things, in my experience; one's choice of vices says nothing about one's intelligence, and the idea that willpower is all you need to beat an addiction is a pernicious and idiotic myth.

37. 52% of smokers try to quit...
If it's all it's cracked up to be, why do more than half of you try to quit? http://www.cdc.gov/Tobacco/datahighlights/Page4.htm

Either you're not smart enough to know it's killing you, or you do know it's killing you but you're too weak to do anything about it. Either excuse reveals a deep character flaw, AFAIC.

But hey, puff away. I see it as thinning the herd.

49. The one overarching reason smokers try to quit
$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$

A vast number of men started smoking during World War II, when the Army issued cigarettes with the K-rations.

When the price of smokes started going up, they started to try to quit.

Smoking's not the best thing for you, admittedly, but why don't people condemn all sorts of other dangerous behaviors with the same vigor? Maybe because just about everybody does something they shouldn't?

36. Ex-smokers are often worse than lifelong non-smokers.
They're full of this almost evangelical missionary zeal that manifests itself in contempt. I know, I am one, and it's a constant battle not to feel smug. But I do try not to be, because I've been there.

However, Sid has a bit of a point regarding willpower, anyway. Hitler was a non-smoker and he had tremendous willpower -- in fact, ever see "Triumph of the Will?" The Nazis were chock full of "will" power, even "triumphantly" so.

But Churchill and FDR weren't non-smokers, and the rest is history.

47. Sid's point is not that good, actually
Having worked with alcoholics, for example, and having them in my family, I can assure you that most of them have absolutely tremendous willpower, except when it comes to not drinking.

The "willpower" argument is typical of those who have not the experience which they criticize.

I don't care at all. I don't feel any smugness, I simply don't care. It's none of my business. Maybe it's because I continue to smoke pot regularly, but to each his or her own.

62. As a life-long non smoker, I'm hear to tell you that what makes me sick...
...is the prudish self-righteousness of some of my fellow non-smokers. They remind me of fundy tub-thumpers raging against homosexuals or women's right to choose in some backwoods pellagra pulpit when some of them get their dander up about whether their neighbor smokes cigarettes or not. It's a very strange thing to witness from so-called "progressives."
