Poll question: Do you and your family discuss politics on Thanksgiving if it comes up? |
|
I answered #2, but I'm curious how this works for everyone else's family.
I will say I'm lucky that the ratio of DEMS in my family is about 75-25. (Yay!!)

as the only republican in the family can't make it - she's enjoying the benefits of *'s economy too much to be able to afford to drive down from New York.

I'm a born diplomat, so I work my way from their perspective, which always starts good.
Then I start using facts, and everyone else wants to abandon the conversation. Sticky things, those facts.
I believe the operative term has become, "Well, let's just drop it, OK?"
Everyone stays friendly, but... well, you know.

Thanksgiving is at my bro-in-laws house. He's a chicken-hawk ditto-head, who amazingly enough is really intelligent outside of the political realm (engineer-scientist at HP). I'm sure my father-in-law and I will have some quiet congratulations for each other on the side, but mom-in-law has forbidden political discussion at family gatherings for the sake of the furniture.
It's bizarre, the whole family is politically very liberal; except for the son who is the political black sheep of the family. He and I manage to get along by sticking to topics involving high-tech, home theater, movies and TV. It gets ugly fast, otherwise. I'm really hoping that he or his wife somehow bring up politics tomorrow. I'm really in the mood for a good gloat, to go with my Thanksgiving bloat.

17. My family falls in the #2 category, particularly my sister & brother-in-law... |
|
...who are big time GOP (although she was raised better, I'm always teasing her). This year the get-together is at our home, and since we had a bet on who would take the House & Senate, my sis owes me a bottle of Crown Royal and a six pack of Blue Moon (the Blue Moon was for the House; the Crown was for the Senate).
I'm going to pick her and her family up at the airport later today, but my wife talked to her last night and she's ready to "pay up." I can't wait to hear what my brother-in-law has to say - he once told me that the GOP would hold Congress for the next "fifty years." I'm going to remind him of that while I'm mixing my first C & C of the evening...

20. My sister & I have told mom to keep her frickin' mouth shut this year. |
|
Last year, while everyone was enjoying chatting & visiting, she suddenly shouted out, "Well you'll be happy to know I'm sick of Bush & the whole Iraq mess. I think we should just nuke the whole middle east area & be done with it." To which my sister replied, "Have a drink & shut up Mom!"
 I love my sister!

We don't do family dinner.
All the relatives are either dead or too far away or we don't get along with them. The ones we don't get along with are conservative bullying fundies (my SO's kids) or on my side, I have rich conservative Methodist relatives who might as well be fundies. We have nothing in common.
We do our T day at our fave Unitarian church potluck. And I take my fabulous chocolate cream cheese pie. :9

Ignoring or denying this only worsens the problem. Things need fixing, right now, and it won't happen if we can't even talk about it.
