Local roast becomes political pep rally for Democrats (Kerry in VA + 50 state plan)
The Virginian-Pilot
By MIKE GRUSS

CHESAPEAKE - Less than two weeks after control of Congress shifted, the region's Democratic leaders turned a roast of Del. Lionell Spruill Sr. on Monday into a victory celebration.

Surrounded by Rep. Bobby Scott and at least 15 other officeholders at the Holiday Inn Chesapeake, Sen. John Kerry rallied about 475 Democrats, playfully trading barbs with Spruill, but emotionally detailing the Democratic agenda for the next two years.

(snippage)

Some leaders credit Kerry's candidacy in 2004 with identifying Democratic voters in Virginia. Those same voters, they say, later put Gov. Timothy M. Kaine and Sen.-elect Jim Webb into office.

Monday, Kerry said the Democratic majority would continue to grow in Virginia because it is a party with ideas.

"It is time for Iraqis to stand up for Iraq and for our troops to come home," he said of the war.

Thanks for turning my home state bluer, John Kerry and Howard Dean!

Meanwhile back at the ranch it looks like, after a short "botched joke" break, Mr. Kerry is back on the road for the Dems. Cool.

2. That's a great pic
Thanks for sharing. I'm glad to see that our party leadership is not as fractious as some in the RW media would like us to believe.

There's two guys I'd like to have a beer with :toast:

7. Sure is!
And I can attest that the taller one is a great guy to have a beer with. It would be cool as heck to have a beer with both of them together though!

12. Hey, LittleClarkie -- I had no idea you were from Virginia!
I've been in Virginia Beach for 5 years -- still pretty red here, but we've shaved the margins so that Webb's excellent showing in NoVa was enough to put him over the top.

I was also interested in reading that Kerry's work in '04 helped us in '05 and '06. That's fantastic.

So was my dad. He met mom when he was stationed in Great Lakes.

5. It must have been the campaign trail 2004
I know that Dean travelled with Kerry for a while as he helped campaign for him.

14. Dean and Kerry gained alot of respect for each other - Dean was one of the few
Dems who Kerry trusted on the campaign trail during the general along with Clark and Cleland. Most name Dems chose to sit 2004 out.

11. And the Mighty Republican Wurlitzer wheezes to life
Oh no! A political roast that turned into a political rally! And John Kerry was there! Scandal, shock, outrage, and controversy! Kerry has a long face! He looks French! And his wife is wealthy! Booga, booga, booga! Ahhhhh!

Gee, the old tunes just don't sound the same anymore . . . {Wistful sigh}

16. Hmm... I think the Iraqis' "standing up" is the problem
They all need to sit down for a little bit so we can get the $*%# out of there.
