What does "united we stand" mean?
I always interpret it to be a message from the right that means "shuttup and do things our way so we can be united." I saw a magnetic sticker saying that on a car today and I so wished I had another one to put below it that said "let's unite behind the Democrats."

1. Yeah I don't get that either
And what in the hell does "these colors don't run" mean? I always see that next to a "Proud to be an American" sticker...

3. I've wondered about that one too.
The best I can come up with is it's a Republicans answering their own "cut and run" foolish meme. However, that's just a guess.

6. I guess it means like "the USA doesn't run from adversity"
or something...I still don't get it.

16. There isn't a bumper sticker big enough to refute that one. We ran from:
The Battle of Bunker Hill
The Battle of Brooklyn Heights
The 1st and 2nd Battles of Bull Run
The Battle of Kasserine Pass.
The list goes on and on.

The right-wing idjits want to pretend that we've ALWAYS been an invincible military power. (Which is idiotic on the face of it, seeing as we're not invincible right NOW, even.) The point of this reply is not that American troops ran from some battles, but that we learned from our mistakes, fought back, and won. So cool it, colors-don't-run-folks, okay?

18. Colors technically can't run anyways
Who ever heard of Purple and Green playing tag with Yellow. Colors are an idea. Ideas can't physically run.

Anyways, I like the bumperstickers that are like "These colors don't run the world"

20. I always thought it had a double meaning
"colors running" is a term I always associated with doing laundry. If the colors are symbolic of what ever the hell Amerika is they will not distort or otherwise ruin the fabric.

4. Ideally, it's a statement of solidarity I guess
But solidarity is supposed to be all of us taking a stand in support of those who have the least, even if it means sacrificing something on our end. So one union might go on strike in solidarity with another union fighting for a contract.

It doesn't make much sense to me when it's used by a bunch of anti-union people to pressure those with the least to support the agenda of those with the most. In that context, it's more like United We Stand Otherwise They're Gonna Taser Us.

5. I think it means "Heil Chimpenfuehrer" and "We're #1" together
Just like "Support the troops" really means "You're either with the Chimpenfuehrer or you're with the terrorists."

8. It is the entropic nature of the universe for things to take the path of least resistance.
It is the nature of humans to attempt to complicate the simple and simplify the complex. Human obsession with singularity is one example of the latter. This trait is recognized and used by advertisers, propagandists, religions and all sorts of groups interested in controlling the minds of others.

9. United we Stand was the group formed by Ross Perot when he
was running for President as an Independant. At that time, it meant if we stick together, we can defeat the greedy, selfish, arrogant folks in Washington.

If it's meaning has changed, that's news to me.

United we stand, or sticking together, is always the best was for any group of people to succeed.

11. Wasn't there a rather "hippie" song called "United We Stand"?
Edited on Wed Nov-22-06 03:06 PM by ProudToBeBlueInRhody
I seem to recall them playing it during the "Freedom Rock" commercial while watching old reruns of "Cannon" back in college.

Oh...yeah...and Patrick Henry said it too. I'm not a complete moron only wrapped in pop culture after all.......

14. I assume it's a concession to the democratic process.
You know. When a course of action is chosen, we're all in it together.

Divided we discuss. But once that's finished, we all accept the results.

Assuming they're legitimate.

19. Giant billboards w/ "United We Stand" appeared in DC within days after 9/11
It was uncanny, almost as if they'd been sitting in a warehouse ready to be put up. Paid for by Verizon.

21. Remember "United We Stand America"?
Ross Perot's group dedicated to balancing the budget, returning American jobs back to America and passing on something we can be proud of on to our kids instead of $9 trillion dollars of debt? I liked that better than, "shut up and salute the flag as we invade random oil rich nations".
