2. Glad to see that CNN and Paula Zombie are doing some really
hard-hitting news stories these days. There are so many distracting little side stories, like Iraq, and it's great that someone finally is covering the serious stuff.

19. Turkey fried in peanut oil is fantastic
Well... IF you're not allergic to peanuts :D

Seriously. They taste very good, peanut oil (to my understanding) isn't as bad as regular cooking oil, and the deep-frying seals in the flavor of the meat. Deep-fried turkey is honestly better tasting than baking it in an oven, and it's faster.

The danger- and it IS a very serious danger- is overfilling the fryer. When full, the oil should cover the turkey, but NO FURTHER. If you overfill the fryer, you can cause a very serious fire.

NEVER USE A TURKEY FRYER INDOORS. Here, let me say that a little louder:

NEVER USE A TURKEY FRYER INDOORS.

Always fry your turkey outside, well away from any structures, just in case.

6. Unfortunately, a real and frequent danger.
A similar report was on our local news last night. Apparently, those turkey deep fryers are often known to start blazes when stupid people use them, especially when frozen birds are put into them or they're over-filled with hot oil.

See video _here_

12. I don't see any problem with this kind of story on CNN...........
........but then again, I was IN a kitchen fire started by oil over-heating in a pan. A small fire immediately engulfed the room in thick black smoke that nearly caused me to keel over trying to put it out. It's no fun trying to put out a fire without an extinguisher handy...........now i keep several around the house and usually give them to friends as housewarming gifts.

call me a worry wart.

15. Thanks for posting that flick--they do look dangerous and it seems
appropriate to have some news coverage of the turkey fryers. BTW, deep fat fried turkey just doesn't sound that good to me...

22. Usually they're cooked in peanut oil.
And yes- that makes them taste very very good.

My mom is doing king crab legs tomorrow instead of turkey... but I kinda wish we were having a fried turkey instead.

They really do taste that good.

Here's a site that explains the pros and cons of frying a turkey, along with some nutrition information:

7. Geeez, that whole riff is becoming quite the staple of the season
They haul out the same archival footage of some dickwad lowering a frozen turkey into a vat of bubbling oil on a mock up of a deck, and the whole she-bang goes up in flames. Oooooooh! This is what stupid people DO!

The footage is as tired as the "light the pajamas of small children on fire" blurbs that are popular around Halloween, with ugly little mannequins of kids wearing the flaming PJs....or the "Blow your hand off with a firecracker" riff we see on the Fourth of July.

Of course, after the "flaming turkey" of November, what could possibly be next to rivet our eyes to the screen? Ah, yes, the dangerous holiday lights that will short out and burn down your house, OR the dried out Xmas tree that catches fire and is roaring and crackling, over there, in the corner of the living room.....

25. My ex married a guy who put fireplace ashes in a paper bag
on Christmas Eve. Then he places the bag tight up to a foundation vent. Burned the house down. Of course she was already involved with him at the time so she was sympathetic.

23. Okay, fine, but the problem is,
people actually DO put frozen turkeys into the fryer, they actually DO do this indoors, and they actually DO burn their houses down as a result.

Read the papers in two days. You'll probably find some story about some poor schlep who couldn't figure out that frozen bird + hot oil DO NOT PLAY NICE TOGETHER.

Okay, all together now: the bird should be fully thawed, and the oil should JUST cover the bird WHEN THE BIRD IS LOWERED INTO THE FRYER.

That, and the top of the fryer should be well above the top of the turkey when in the fryer. In other words, buy a tall fryer and you should be fine.

28. Also it needs to be VERY DRY. Preferably hung on a hook of some sort
and allowed to air dry for at least 2 or 3 hours. I'm not a hugh (sic) turkey lover but I really like
the flavor from this method. ;-)

24. This actually IS a serious danger........
.....for people who don't think about what they're doing. Which is most of America, sad to say.

As I said above, read the papers two days from now. I can almost guarantee you you'll see a story about someone losing their home after misusing a turkey fryer.

Fry these away from any structures, and all will be well, even if you DO ruin the turkey in the process.

But, I have to say.... fried turkey is WONDERFUL. Mouth-watering, flavorful, juicy... YUM!!
