Are folks prepared for the political discussions tomorrow?
My Thanksgiving should be interesting since my entire family is Republican. My BIL is a navy officer and my sister told me she went to see Toby Keith when I told her I went to see the Dixie Chicks. I usually refuse to argue but this time I may gloat about Dems victories. Then, there are the homophobic jokes from the nephew. My daughter is bi but the hasn't come out to this side of the family. We've already had a few fights among cousins about the homophobia even before we knew my daughter was bi. Awww, should be interesting.

1. I would give the same advice given me over fifty years ago.
Apologize immediately, especially when you are right.

3. UGH, hearing all that makes me glad
that the only get together is with my boyfriend and he is a good solid Democrat like me. To be fair while my extended family (aunts, uncles cousins etc.) were all repukes but when we used to get together for holidays politics was never mentioned.

Good luck Cally! I just can't do it anymore, am proud that you are able to do it.

Report back the atrocities, and Happy Thanksgiving!

6. I'm not allowed to discuss politics. No really I'm not.
It's gardening and anything else. No politics. However, since I can't discuss it, no one else does either so it has it's upside and it's not one sided because they know I will speak up if any freeper rhetoric comes my way.

11. That's the sort of understood rule in my family
If someone mentions politics or religion, then I can. Otherwise, no politics or religion. It's sort of hard when I spend most of my free time working on politics.

18. Yeah, I know. It really is ignoring the elephant in the room,
throwing a tablecloth over it and putting the turkey and fixings on it, while everyone sits around it ignoring it. However, it's once a year.

7. the political discussions will be great
having the holiday with our best friends. Also liberal Dems.

Of course, my entire family are Dems too. Despite what the spin may be, there aren't too many Jewish Republicans.

10. Jewish Repubs For Me Tomorrow
My 2 cousins are Repubs, so I'll have to deal with them tomorrow. I think they know that things are at least a little FUBAR right now, so they haven't really been too mouthy the last few times I've been around them.

I'm sure they'll blame Clinton for something though during the course of the evening.

14. wow
my mom and I used to argue about politics a little. Mainly Israel (she was more militant than me) and some Democratic politics too. But she a die hard liberal. I have an uncle who leans Republican, but he'd vote Dem for me. Everyone else is very Democrat. My brother in law voted for Reagan in 80, but is very embarrased by it.

9. I Plan To Keep My Head Low
I can gloat with people who gloat back

I really don't want to start anything this time around, or if I don't start it, I don't want to get into it.

On the other hand, my brother in law is coming down and he'll surely start something with my Republican in laws.

But really, it is better at this juncture in life, with all that is going on with me and mine, to stay low, avoid conflict, and be a peacemaker.

21. I was almost ready to do that to do some research about homelessness
in my county first hand, something that has been bothering me. My family told me that we had been invited to other people's houses for TG, so I told them I would rather not but they should go and not worry about me with this other idea in mind. They changed their minds and decided to do it at home after all, so I am obligated. But they said that they really wanted to stay home, so that's the way that cookie crumbled.

20. Oh yeah...my Uncle will make the following arguments...
1. Democrats won only because of George Bush, and that the result was really a cry for conservatism.

2. Democrats will only take to arguing among themselves and won't be able to hold their majorities.

3. He is a lobbyist (a very ethical one), who worked on Capitol Hill for many years. He will intimate that he has some kind of inside knowledge into the true character of folks like George Allen, and it is a shame such a great guy was defeated based on lies about his character.

I will just laugh!!!

27. Sounds like the best response
When the family members actually involved in politics are around, I'm more able to argue and laugh. I get stymied with the military mindset and patriotism shield.
