(Snicker) Fox to Launch "Daily Show" for Conservatives
Satire hands a right
Fox, Surnow prep conservative skein
By MICHAEL LEARMONTH
Comedy Central has made a good living out of skewering the political right.

Now Fox News Channel, a primary source of material for Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert, is teaming with the exec producer of "24" to try its hand at a news satire show for conservatives to love.

Joel Surnow, co-creator of "24," is shooting two half-hour pilots of a skein he described as " 'The Daily Show' for conservatives," due to air in primetime on Saturdays in January.

If successful, the show could take its place on the regular schedule, adding satire to FNC's formula of news and opinion.

"The way I look at it, almost every comedy show or satire show I see uses the same talking points against George W. Bush and Dick Cheney," Surnow said. "The other side hasn't been skewered in a fair and balanced way."

will bomb. Can you imagine who these people are? And what would be funny to them?

how are they going to do this without intelligence and a sense of humor?
Fox is nothing but a one-note mean machine - not funny or clever.

5. Kinda like Doonesbury v. Mallard Fillmore.
My local paper runs both on the editorial page.

Doonesbury is subtle, sophisticated, intellectual. Fillmore is crude, slimy, lowbrow. Seeing the two together always reminds me of which side I'm on, and why.

16. They can't even be original. "A Daily Show for Conservatives"
says it all to me. I can see a lot of Hillary jokes and old jokes about Clinton's clenis. There isn't anything funny there anymore. So then they will do mean spirited bigoted jokes and probably descend into bodily function humor. Honestly, I really wish they could do something witty and fresh, but they can't because they can't laugh at themselves first before they laugh at anyone else.

>To: Tall_Texan; L.N. Smithee; All
It seems to be a very good idea, and one where FR could be a big help. We have lots of skilled and intelligent writers, a number of whom can be very funny. We could organize a thread where we could brainstorm ideas for this show, and have them polished by some of our members involved in TV writing. Then some of us who have connections with some Fox people could arrange for these ideas to be properly submitted to FNC, since TV shows are very wary of unsolicited scripts from unknowns, for legal reasons and because they tend to be unusable.
You know how bad the writing is on TV, with 200,000 posters we should be able to beat what is out there!! Maybe get a few bucks too!

24. Yea and then THIS show will just become fodder for The Daily Show.
Plus, most "conservative humor" isn't really funny...it's just anger and vitriol.

These are also the same folks who, no doubt, think Colbert is for real. How much real "humor" can they do?

27. OMIGOD
but that pic always gives me the creeps.. she looks just like that CREEPSHOW guy only with Hair, if you want to call it that.. looks more like an explosion in a mattress factory :)

I can't WAIT for this show, seriously, it will be LIVE Faux 'satire', they really WILL NOT realize that they are satirizing themselves and that will make it a real treat, I think it will get high ratings personally, because so many people love to rubberneck at Train and Car Wrecks..

Everyone will watch it in DISGUST, unable to turn their heads away or turn the channel.

Using the guy from the show "24"? Isn't that a real knee slapping comedy itself? Shows where their heads are at, like getting an undertaker to host a Wedding :)

And with Freepers writing it, it's icing on the cake - can't believe that they even THINK they know anything about show biz from that post alone..

Can't wait!

http://www.yourmorningleibowitz.blogspot.com

It's a somewhat rude cartoon strip version of The Daily Show that I do on my blog. Here's an example of how it works:

Thank you from the bottom of my heart for letting me use that joke in it. You may see it tonight - and I'll credit you for coming up with it, if that's OK...

I sort of wonder if they might get a little anxious using the actual name of the show, are you worried about that?

Sometimes even the funny guys have agents with no sense of humor, and they have products like the Daily show they have to 'protect' from any and all things..

Looks like satire to me, what do I know, just looking out for you..

Thanks for the credit, it's just something from my book coming up, usually related to bears in Alaska, but it seemed appropriate with the EVIL ONES kissing on the Satan Camera :)

46. The legal issue - taken care of
Edited on Thu Nov-23-06 09:29 PM by hsher
I have a pretty good entertainment law firm looking out for my interests. The main attorney concerned has checked the site out, and says it's protected under satire and fair use. Now, if I were doing a videotaped, 3-camera television show, had a grizzle-haired, hangdog, adorable host in a business suit who called himself "Jon Stewart", parodied the news on it, posted that on YouTube, and called it "The Daily Show", "The Morning Show", "Fake News Journal" or anything like the above, then I would be liable for a C&D letter and a massive Viacom lawsuit. But so far, to best of his and the firm's knowledge, I'm perfectly safe from legal action.

Jon Stewart's manager is a little piss-ant and could foreseeably do something to meddle with me, like sending a facetious and null, neuter C&D to me; and he hates me, so I could see him doing that; but if he did, I'd just take a couple of return actions, among them saying NO and refusing to comply with his C&D; and that would force him to do actions even further in return that would only result in greater celebrity for me and the comic strip - so don't count on him to do that any time soon.

He's terrified of me and Stewart getting in contact with one another, because I want to star Jon in some features - something manager does not want to see happen without him in control of it - and because I know a few things about what he's been doing to Jon's career, and he knows I'll fucking tell Stewart in a New York second the minute he and I are alone with each other. If he brings media attention to my site with a C&D or erroneous lawsuit, I'll become a news item.

There is no faster way to come to Jon Stewart's attention at Busboy in New York, and James Dixon knows this. If he makes my blog a legal issue, I'll simply fight it. That will make me and the blog's legality a news item. Jon *seems* easy-going and an advocate of online freedom where his name is non-libellously concerned. We'll see. If ol' Jim makes me suddenly popular, Jon will find out about and probably greenlight the blog, and then he and I, through his lawyers and mine, will be in contact.

Ergo, I can then report on the dirty tricks his manager has been up to concerning his career. Dixon won't touch me. He lives in a world of fear now, and I welcome his pint-sized ass to it. :)

I wish him luck continuing to suppress the truth from his client.

(Edited to add) :

I also have a well-known Manhattan litigator. Jim? Please, bring it on!

I didn't know how savvy you were, now I do.. my wife and I got hit with a Half a Million buck lawsuit by Michael Savage a few years back, (instead of sueing our site Takebackthemedia.com, they went after my wife, the shitheads), so I didn't want anyone to get smacked around with a SLAP suit again.. it's horrible, and can cost a lot of money just to 'play' :)

Keep it up, I think it's brilliant, saw your pic in the Lounge too, I thought you were a GUY, so sorry :)

I posted there too, got lots of flash goodies at my site, you might enjoy those as well, won a Hollywood award for my earlier flash.. been on O'Reilly once and Scarborough twice so I know a little about hitting the circuit..

Looks like you know the biz close up, might want to ask you about agents in the future, got a book coming up, been working on it for five years and I expect to change the world with it :)

KEEP SLAMMING THEM, it's Great, great stuff..

47. This ought to be a Hoot
In my mind, Satire is an intelligent and wry take on the foibles of the subjects being skewered; a sort of pulling away the wool from the eyes of those who have been duped.

I can't imagine any of the Freep types with enough humor in their souls, never mind the intellectual wit required for successful satire.

What we will get from them is more than likely ugly name-calling, personal and ethnic slurs on those who disagree with them, et al. In other words, just more of the same crap they have been handing down for years.

Perhaps they can call it "Free Republic TV"!
