3. People who believe material pursuits = American dream will.
Edited on Wed Nov-22-06 10:02 PM by Selatius
They will run up several thousand in credit card debt.

They will buy things they don't need to try to impress people they never really liked to begin with. They will buy things they don't need to make themselves happy in a life devoid of happiness only to find what comfort they gain is fleeting and illusory. They do this to "keep up with the Joneses" little realizing that the path to true happiness is not the size of one's flatpanel television or the size of one's SUV but is something found within and, perhaps, found in the love of another.

7. Don't feel bad...
Where I live, one of the malls is opening up at 3am on Friday. It was in the newspaper and online here in Delaware. They plan on giving out free coffee, having early bird specials, giveaways, and a concert from a local band. Now, there is no way that I want to be standing out in the cold for free Starbucks coffee and a concert at 3 o'clock in the morning.

8. I spent years in retail and back then we opened at 7AM on Black Friday
(as it was known to the sales staff, it was Good Friday to the management).

There will be people lined up, I promise. Many will (no joke) sleep in their cars.

Having sales staff come it in that early never did make sense to me considering how few sales we actually made during the time. This was a high-end department store, so your average Mervyn's and Target may vary...

Hardware cheap enough, but the supplies are outrageous! He's going to buy a different one, so probebly won't be shopping at 5AM this year!

15. I worked retail for over 10 years--those aren't the people that show up.
People who work irregular hours normally don't have Black Friday off, for one thing.

The people who show up have fire in their eyes and greed on their minds--and too much time off and oodles of cash to spend.

it wasn't too bad at all, the manager lady at walmart was very strict about no riots in her store. I stood in line with 16 kids, I was the only adult :) they acted more grown up than alot of adults I have seen waiting in line.

18. I did it once..........
at 5 am fought over furbys with about 100 other frenzied mothers who wanted to get one for their kid.....it reminded me of a play in a football game. the doors opened, people rushing the door, pushing, shoving, some tackling, some old woman ran over my heels with her shopping cart, man people are RUDE at 5 a.m. needless to say, I wasn't fast enough to get one that day....but a week later I happened to be at kmart as they were putting out 4 furbies on a shelf, so I got one that day, but it was defintinely an experience to see how immature grown ups can be.

28. I think there is definitely an element of that.
The fact that they have, say, a laptop computer for $299 bucks, knowing full well that there will be enormous demand for it--and then stock 15 per store and no rainchecks. They just do it to build the excitement.

They could sell the same laptop for $75 more, have 150 in stock, and make a MUCH better profit but it wouldn't feed the greed.

34. Or doesn't have the day off
maybe have to be in for the 7am shift and want to pick up a few bargins on the way to work. We don't all live and work a M-F/9-5.

We have 24 hr beauty salons, etc. Very convenient for people who get off of work at midnight or go in to work for a 5am shift.

While I was growing up, mom worked in a bakery (not a store) and went to work at 9pm and off at 4am. She use to try to get things done (grocery shopping, etc) between 4am and 7am and then get home before dad left for work. Then she'd get us off to school, before going to bed, after we all left for our "normal" hours. Mom would have had your donuts baked and be at Mervyns by 5am. LOL

43. I used to shop at 5 AM when I lived in a tourist trap
and no, I wasn't generally up at that hour, so it was a real chore. It was the only time the markets weren't jam packed with hostile tourists and their overtired and screaming kids, though.

I still shop at 5 AM here in the summer if I can't sleep.

I also worked the night shift for 18 years. My OP was to remind people that a lot of us out there don't wear nice clothes and have manicures and work 9 to 5 and go crazy on the day after Thanksgiving and show up at 5 AM when we don't have to.

was open that early!! It would help immensely to save me time and help me sleep! That said, I'm not buying shit for Christmas this year, I've had it, my kids have enough as it is, and my hubby and I also. So no I won't be at Mervyns or Kohls or Target at 5 am unless it's to pick something up that I need.

I remember going throug a phase of sleeplessness from 3-4am, but generally, I was sound at 5am. But the hot flashes were a nuisance and I felt really mean for two hours. Good thing everyone else was knocked out.

Before my local grocery store stopped being open 24/7 and decided to close at midnight, I did all my grocery shopping anywhere between 1-4 am. And I would be thrilled if more stores were open in the middle of the night, so I could actually shop with my husband, rather than alone.

46. There's a midnight opening around here too.
Store or mall or something-or-other, I don't even remember - I just caught an ad on TV the other day. To me, it would be a lot easier to stay up and go shopping at midnight, than to get up at an ungodly hour the next morning.

I'm of the opinion, for those who want to go, to whom it's an "event" and an adventure, where's the harm? I've done it once or twice myself in years past - though certainly not at 5 AM. This year, I'm happy to stay home and relax. I've found that anything I want or need, I can find online with a lot less hassle, and usually at a better price.

49. I've done it for years and it's great fun -
- almost like taking part in the big hunt and stalking prey. When my kids were little, I'd go with a girlfriend and we would "tandem shop" - one would stand in the LOONNNGG line with our collective items to purchase while the other would go and grab the toys on our lists, taking them back to the friend already in line. We cut our shopping time in half that way.

I'll review the local newspaper sale inserts today - make my list - and be up at 4:00 am tomorrow. I'll be in and out of the stores before breakfast and will have purchased the more expensive gifts on my list, saving a huge amount of $$$$$.

And - yes - if the price is right, I'll go to WalMart.

I don't usually go shopping on Black Friday, but this year there is a particular item that we'll likely need in the next year that is marked at a lower price than it likely will be all year, so I'll probably be in line at 5 tomorrow morning.
