Thanksgiving with the religious right
My wife and I are having her family over for Thanksgiving. There will be ten other adults, eight of whom are EXTREMELY right wing and religious to the point where they are in agreement with people like Pat Robertson, D. James Kennedy, John Hagee, Benny Hinn, Rush Limbaugh, Ann Coulter, and the like.

My wife on the other hand is a liberal Christian, and I- I'm a liberal atheist.

Several of them always bring up politics, and then get pissed off when my wife and I invariably disagree with them.

When someone says "those democrats sure fooled everyone this election", should my response be.....

(1) Silence

(2) Mmmmhhh... this ham sure is good!

(3) no they didn't, they won because....

(4) Shut the f--k up!

(5) God must have willed it.

(6) Ahhhhaaaahha! Ahhhaaahhha!

3. I am in the same position, but I, long ago made it clear...
that we would not discuss politics. I knew it would be divisive and said as much and asked them that if they didn't want to ruin Thanksgiving (Christmas, Easter, Fourth of July, etc) that it was OFF BOUNDS! Put your foot down at the beginning and don't budge - you are not going to impose your beliefs on them and you won't have them impose theirs on you - this is a time for thanksgiving(hence the title). You really have to do this or they will run all over you - they seem to delight in this.

9. get it off of party and toward "politicians" in general
ala... ya those politcians try to pull the wool over folks eyes and always succeed at it - both parties... blah blah blah

Point is if you find or create common ground on not trusting the veracity of politicians in general (repub or dem) - the whole political conversation either ends or at least goes into generalized politician bashing rather than dems are bad, repubs are good rightwing talk rhetoric.

Why...?

My ex was right about one thing (and one thing only). She said her mother was an asshole best left out of her life. I convinced her she should bring her mother back into her (our) life.

I apologize every time I see her.

Our life was a Jerry Springer Show-like adventure from hell while that woman was in it.

Life is short... cut those people loose and get on with the good life.

12. Don't say anything. Put on a big pair of shiny shades, a phony rainbow afro

Hold up a picture of Rick Santorum, and start singing "Naaa Naaa Naaa, Naaa... Naaa Naaa Naaa Naaa... Hey, Hey... Good-Bye!"

14. How about: "Is the rumor true that the Yankees are trying to buy Pujols from SL?"
Or, "Thank goodness Jesus taught us the lesson of being able to be in the presence of whores and sinners and still be able to withold judgement and just enjoy the meal."
