"Richards is just a comedian who has gone wild, but Lott has real power,"
The above is a quote from Jesse Jackson in an interview with the Chicago Defender.

Relevant excerpt:

But Jackson Sr. also believes it's not good to concentrate on Richards so much and ignore the fact that Sen. Trent Lott (R-Miss.) will be second in command in the Senate Minority come January.

"Richards is just a comedian who has gone wild, but Lott has real power," Jackson Sr. said.

Lott voted against extension of the Voting Rights Act in 1982 and he showed support for known racist, the late-Sen. StromThurmond, who ran a pro-segregation presidential campaign in 1948, among other incidents, Jackson Sr. said.

Jackson said he told Richards to call him again after the Rainbow PUSH Coalition leader has a chance to talk to other African American leaders.
